Cruise formal question

DH just booked us a cruise in December and it says they have formal nights but not a lot of detail explained it. For those who have gone on a cruise how formal did you go? Cocktail or full length evening? TIA!

Re: Cruise formal question

  • We recently cruised on Carnival and a cocktail dress was fine for formal nights. :)

  • "Formal" on a cruise is much less formal than anywhere else, IMO.  I wore a cocktail dress (slightly slutty, actually, since it was just DH and I) but there were lots of women in more casual dresses.

  • I think it depends on what cruiseline you are going on and what areas.  For example, European and Alaskan cruises are more formal than Caribbean cruises.  Carnival is very informal.  Royal Caribbean is somewhat in the middle and Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian are a little bit more formal from what I have read online.  I wore a cocktail dress on our Celebrity cruise to the E. Caribbean and felt it was appropriate, especially for my age.  There were a lot of older women in full length gowns and older men in tuxes.
  • We did an 8 day cruise for our honeymoon (2 formal nights). I wore a cocktail dresses for both nights....some had long evening gowns but honestly they stuck out like a sore thumb.
  • I went on a Celebrity cruise last year and we had 2 formal nights. For one, I wore a long black gown, and for the other I wore a nice cocktail dress. I felt appropriately dressed in both.
  • That helps so much! Thanks!
  • I wore a cocktail dress for both of the formal nights when DH and I cruised. Ladies were wearing everything from full out evening gown to casual sundresses though.

I usually do a cocktail dress for these.  Some people were more formally dressed but most were less.  I saw one lady in a fancy sparkly cocktail dress and $ 5 plastic flipflops.
