PSA: Get a RoadID and get cleared to train

Short-short version: One of DH's training group collapsed on Sat and is now in a medically induced coma. Please make sure you are medically cleared to train/race and GET A ROADID! http://www.roadid.com/Common/default.aspx MrB just ordered his today.

Long version:

My DH was training like he does every Saturday with his marathon team. There are many groups so everyone is represented. He's in the ~3:00 hour group, the person who fell out is in the walker/runner group. He was done running on Sat morning and was waiting with his group in the parking lot of the grocery store they all congregate at before/after training, just hanging around waiting for all the teams to get back. A woman pulls up in her car and says one of the runners is down and they (the group) did not know what that meant. DH took off (in his flip flops Indifferent) back down the road to see if she meant 'she JUST collapsed' or if he could offer help... and he left his cell phone behind. Confused He runs up to the scene and there are many people arriving. An EMT happened to be driving by in his own car and figured they needed aid, so HE stopped. A firetruck just happened to be in the area and was called over and an AED was quickly found (either from the firetruck or an elem. school next door - not sure).

This woman got SO lucky that she collapsed on the road, that an EMT happened to be driving by, that she was with her team and NOT on the trail they had been running on and the fire/rescue was able to get to her SO fast. This would have all been VERY bad if this happened earlier when they were less accessible on their path. From what we have gathered she was medically cleared, and she was leading her team that day. Sad

I think DH is ready to get another physical. He had a stress test 2 years ago, but he may now ask to get another one, and he is TRULY in the best physical condition of his life. You really never know when something like this can happen!

Also: DH's coach (all groups have one) showed us this CPR video from the AHA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5hP4DIBCEE

Re: PSA: Get a RoadID and get cleared to train

  • It kind of freaks me out when I hear stories like that, and of racers who die from some totally out of the blue coronary event during a marathon or a triathlon or something.  There were several at the Philadelphia marathon last year, and the NYC Triathlon too.  It's so easy to think, oh I'm in shape, my blood pressure is low, my BMI is good, I'm fine.  And so humbling to realize that sometimes we're not.
  • how awful.

and now I'm going to order a road ID.

  • I'd love to get cleared for training.

I'm not sure my health clinic understands what that means, though.  They seem really confused at optional preventative maintenance.  I tried to book a physical a little while ago, and the person booking appointments literally was unable to book it, I think because they didn't have an appropriate code for it.  I eventually got an appointment booked, and was able to explain what I wanted when in the exam room, but even then, they seemed confused by what I was asking about.  (in the end, they ran a handful of blood tests, and told me things looked OK, and left it at that...)

The saddest part of it all - I'm covered by Tricare.  This was a medical clinic on base for military dependents...

ETA: even though I don't do much outdoors, a road ID might still be a not-bad idea for the occassional time I do...  It's at least something I can manage myself...

  • How scary!

Might be a good idea to tie onto my water bottle at the pool...

That is SO sad. DH had a kinda similar experience getting in to see a cardiologist. He did the stress test, then saw the doc who was very much like "and WHY are you here?" Indifferent DH has less than 10% body fat, but that doesn't mean his heart won't give out!!! He's training through the heat of a GA summer to get to Chicago in Oct to qualify for Boston! He runs with his iPhone on an arm band and will now wear the RoadID on his shoe.

  • This is really scary and a good example of why we should always have a RoadID or carry ID on us! I hope that she is ok.
