So, I went to a job interview - yay (mx and DC gtg-folk, don't kill me, please) - and, sadly, it.was.awesome.
The position sounds fanfreakintastic; capitalizes on the skills that I have, and gives me an opportunity to grow in some areas that I'd like to experience growth in. The office is small (only three people plus an intern or two), and I kind of PPH the executive director.
Buuuuuuuuut.....they're not going to budge on the salary number of high 20s to low 30s, which is seriously around half of what I was making in my last position. I can't live on a salary that low in this area, not to mention what it would do to my salary history.
Forgive me while I go cry in a corner now over this lost opportunity. sigh.

How on earth can any legitimate organization (nonprofit or otherwise) expect to obtain any kind of talent for that kind of money?

This is the nature of DC nonprofits. Too many overqualified people and not enough money to go around.
But forgive me for asking, but how are you affording to live now? If you are not earning anything, why would you turn this down because you can't afford to live on it?
I think it sounds like the position you've been waiting for, and would hate to see you turn it down and be miserable for a long time while trying to find something as good that pays better.
That said, I do think DC nonprofits tend to exploit the brainforce there with low wages because the market is in their favor, and it's as douchey when nonprofits do it as when large corporations do it.
I have been in the position of feeling like I'm not being paid what I am worth. It sucks. But I've also been in the position of being unemployed for a long time. For me, being underpaid to do work I like is a better way to live than wondering if I'll ever find a job again.
Just my two cents.
I'm receiving UE right now, and a small amt of alimony. Alimony is about to run out, though, so I HAVE to find a position that will make up the difference.
It's not just that this position doesn't pay what I think it's worth - it's that this position isn't paying enough to live on (for real - it wouldn't cover my rent plus student loan payments, let alone anything else).

Also, fwiw, even the UE office permits me to turn down a job like this because the salary is so far below my previous salary. And, again, it's not just that it's unliveable now - it's that accepting a position this far below my previous salaries would pretty much irreparably damage my salary history, making it increasingly difficult for me to get a fair salary in the future.

Gotcha. I lived on salaries in that range for a long time in DC, but I didn't have SLs, which are a b!tch.

Wow - that's REALLY low, even by DC standards. Yikes. Frankly, that level of compensation for the position level would make me wonder if they are a sustainable org and wonder if they had issues with cash flow. That's almost embarrassingly low.
I think another poster said chalk it up to a networking opportunity and I think that's great advice!
I don't know what DC standards are, but if it is true that 20's are low by DC standards then I think charming makes a really great point.
Ditto charming. I would seriously wonder about their sustainability if they are only offering that kind of salary for a director position.
