Question about Lunges

I've been doing great with running lately and am ready to add more things.  I've never been great at lunges or squats and am starting very slowly.  Why would my bottom knee hurt when doing forward lunges?  Am I not tightening things up enough?  It hurts when I even do one, so it's not that I am overdoing it.
