Re: Private Practice: whats wrong w/Amelia's baby? Spoilers

  • The baby has no brain.

Benjamin Bratt's character told her it was not due to her drug use.

  • How is it still alive if it doesn't have a brain?

The brain stem remains, but it's not enough to sustain life outside of the womb for an extended period of time.

From the CDC's website (link at bottom-just to warn you the CDC's page includes a picture of what a baby born with anencephaly might look like.  I don't consider it to be disturbing but others might):

Anencephaly is a serious birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull. It is a type of neural tube defect (NTD). These are birth defects that happen during the first month of pregnancy, usually before a woman knows she is pregnant. As the neural tube forms and closes, it helps form the baby?s brain and skull (upper part of the neural tube), spinal cord, and back bones (lower part of the neural tube).

Anencephaly happens if the upper part of the neural tube does not close all the way. This often results in a baby being born without the front part of the brain (forebrain) and the thinking and coordinating part of the brain (cerebrum). The remaining parts of the brain are often not covered by bone or skin.

Unfortunately, almost all babies born with anencephaly will die shortly after birth. CDC estimates that each year, about 1 in every 4,859 babies in the United States will be born with anencephaly.

  • baby has ancephaly.  her drug use very likely could have caused this, but not necessarily.  i had an ancephalic patient that lived almost 2 days after birth before dying (many i have seen die pretty quickly).  it is a pretty terrifying sight.  her face was so beautiful, and then i took her hat off to undress her and prepare her for the morgue, and it was a shock to see, even though i knew what to expect.  you can google photos if you are curious, but it is pretty horrific.  some women terminate the pregnancy and induce labor, and some choose to carry to term.  i wonder why she is carrying to term...

  • I was a little confused why they are having her carrry to term too. I gave birth to an ancephalic baby but she was a twin so I had to carry full term and my other baby had nothing wrong with her. They wouldn't let me donate her organs though.
  • Why does this thread have so many views? Over 5,000?

  • About carrying to term- I think she said she had waited too long to terminate and still wasn't really dealing with the situation. If Charlotte hadn't have finally stepped in and basically made her talk, she probably would have just stayed in a numb denial (?) much longer, even though she knew what was in store.

  • It is possible for an anenchephalic baby to become an organ donor if she makes it to term. We had a family once in our NICU who chose to sustain their pregnancy for this reason.

  • The actress that plays Amelia is pregnant IRL, so I imagine the character is carrying to term to lend credibility to the real life circumstances underlying the actress on the show.

Just my thoughts on the matter... but, this way, there are no questions about why she's only being filmed from the chest up or strange exits for her to undertake.
