Future Army wife with a quick question...

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking around this board ever since my husband swore into the military in March, but I've been nervous to say hello.  So, I'm happy to finally have a question to help break the ice.  I call myself a future Army wife because my husband has not left for basic training yet, but he will later this year and his term of service will be for 5 years.

Anyway, my quick question is regarding purchasing a 2nd wedding band for him.  He does already have a band from our wedding last year, but it's yellow and white gold with 3 diamonds in it, so he's afraid that it will get damaged, lost, or the diamonds may fall out while he's away.  I am too of course.  He doesn't think we can afford one since he lost his "civilian" job (a new term I learned from the recruiters) in December, but his birthday is coming up at the end of this month, and I'd like to surprise him with a nice titanium band or something.  Have any of you done this with/for your spouses? If so, what metal would you recommend? So far I've read about titanium, cobalt and carbide (I had never even heard of the last two before I started looking)... I would very much appreciate any personal experiences/recommendations with any of these metals, or others?

Thank you!

So happy to be married to my best friend.

Re: Future Army wife with a quick question...

  • MH wears a cobalt band. It looks really nice and if you've read about it you already know it is more durable than gold. H really likes it and in fact chose it as his original wedding band over white gold.

p.s. Welcome! and tell us more about yourself  : )

  • My H's band was like 50 bucks on Overstock. It's titanium or whatever and it does the job. He can't wear it at work though.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • DH's ring is tungsten carbide.  They are fairly inexpensive.  From what I've seen, they run between $50 and $100.  Of course, that varies depending on the retailer and if the ring has diamonds or not.

DH likes tungsten carbide because its very durable and doesn't scratch easily.  However, it cannot be resized.

  • My H has a titanium one. He really likes it.

This. Although, my husband didn't wear his band to basic training.

  • DH also has a tungsten one. Considering how he's always playing with it and dropping with it, it was a good choice because it would be hella dinged up (dung? Up lol).

    ETA hi and welcome!

  • H has a tungsten one too. We are shallow and picked it because it looked cool. He can't wear it all the time, so it is nice that it didn't cost that much just in case he loses it.

  • H's original one was tungsten with a couple diamonds, but we picked up a $30 something titanium one he wore to BMT and on deployments.

And while tungsten might not scratch easy, it does shatter if dropped (I speak from experience).

  • I knew a guy in BCT that wore a $20 dollar ring on that finger.  It's all about the symobolism at this point.
