S/O braces: What are soft healthy foods?

I just got braces put on and am having a hard time finding healthy softer foods.  I've already popped 4 brackets off so I'm trying to prevent that again.  I use to eat alot of fresh veggies, almonds, and apples for my daytime snack.  I've been eating bananas with pb, string cheese, strawberries, grapes and kiwi.  What are some other things you recommend?

Re: S/O braces: What are soft healthy foods?

  • Greek yogurt
    Cottage cheese
    Oatmeal
  • - Unsweetened apple sauce
    - Cheese sticks/Laughing Cow wheels (I don't like 'string cheese' so I eat other similarly portable cheese)
    - Maybe hummus with red peppers (cucumbers might also be relatively soft compared to other raw veg)
    - Pickles

  • Steamed (like really steamed) veggies.

Yogurt, sugar free jello (my fav but I am out), soups.

What were you doing when you popped your brackets?

You would be surprised that these still hurt when chomping into. I know for me that just biting into something is rough. Bread is the devil.

True. I had braces when I was a teen and I remember that on days when I had a tightening anything sucked. I think skinned cucumbers might not be that bad though, especially if you sort of bite into them on the side/back of your mouth.

  • I stick to things like...yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, soup etc. It kinda sucks I miss having a granola bar as a quick snack that I could keep in my desk at work.

  • on or right after adjustment days i ate a lot of baby food actually. i was partial to the apricots but the peaches were also good.

you could also have the bread and butter pickle slices rather than the whole pickle, or the spears, they can be softer.

also you can bake a sweet potato like french fries with just a bit of olive oil and then put any spices you want on it.

  • It may not necessecarily be what your eating thats popping them off. I was told when I braces as a child that my enamel on my teeth had alot of flouride in them and it made it harder for the brackets to stay on. I popped them off all the time. Now I have them again as an adult. I warned my current ortho about this and he used the "heavy duty" stuff to glue the brackets on this time.

They havent popped off when I was at home, but the ortho has broken 2 off in office just while doing checkups and had to refix them. Just a thought!
