Round Trip-Open ended ticket
I am traveling this summer and have some flexibility on my departure date. I am planning on visiting friends for a couple of weeks this summer and I teach so my return date is still open. How would I purchase this ticket? Is the cost exponentially more expensive than if I choose a date and stick to it. Could I buy a round trip ticket and decide to stay longer and just pay to change it?
Thanks!
Re: Round Trip-Open ended ticket
It depends.... when/where are you going? Is it busy season? How big is your airport? Is it international travel? How many different air carriers are there?
My brother will fly home to the East Coast to visit from the West Coast during holidays when it's usually busier. Sometimes he buys round trip but sometimes he waits if he feels like it's really overpriced, and he finds that it's cheaper booking closer to the date seperate. It really depends. I would start tracking your fares and see what the prices are now and how much cheaper it is roundtrip compared to one-way right now. Also, can you buy your ticket when you're over there when you have a better idea but still 14+ days in advance? I think the closer you get to the actual date, it will be really high, but if you still give it a decent amount of time, you may be fine. It's really hard to tell what the flights will do and for that specific area and time.
I would also look to see what the change fees would be for the specific airlines, some airlines are really great at switching them for you free of charge. I had to stay down in Key West longer than anticipated (tragic I know) because I had the flu, and it was really easy and cheap to switch.
If you do decide to book separately, you would just buy a one-way ticket there. If your booking roundtrip, just make sure you book directly through the airline because it's easier to change if you have any problems.
Hi,
Thanks for all the great information. I am planning on going to Mexico City in the beginning of July. I am not sure how booking a one way ticket internationally works. Do you know if most airlines have a fee where I can buy a round trip ticket with the option to change my return flight for a fee? One way to MEX is 300 dollars and a round trip at this point is looking to be about 800.
