Closing but no keys!

So we closed today! But in our state (not NY) buyers and sellers have separate closings. So we're still waiting for our agent to receive the keys from the sellers' title company. I know it's not a big deal but it doesn't feel real without access to the house. Anyone else have this happen?

Re: Closing but no keys!

  • Where we are, it is 30 days from closing to possession. Which sucks hardcore, because I want in our house! So we technically own the house, but we don't get to get in it for another couple of weeks. I feel you for sure!!!!

  • I've never even heard of this, will you be getting the keys today for sure?
  • Just got word the keys were turned over and our agent is dropping them off at my office in a couple of hours. This double-closing thing is weird but guess it works out!

  • This is how ours was - we had a double closing - we never saw the seller, wouldn't know who they were, other than a name.  However, there were NO keys to even transfer!!!   The man living there had NO keys!  We had to get all new locks - right away!  It was crazy!  Long story short, his mother lived there, when she died, he couldn't afford the house, yada, yada, yada...who knows where the keys ever ended up!  But I'm with you, it just didn't seem official without keys...

  • We're scheduled to close this Friday and I was just asking our realtor about this very thing!  Hmm, another thing in the house-buying process that's different than what HGTV shows us! Wink

  • We closed on the same date as the sellers, but we never sat down with them when we signed as we didn't live in the same city. It was really hard though as we lived in another city from the house, so we didn't get the keys until 3 days after closing. It was kinda scary because we had everything packed up and ready to move before we closed. But it all worked out, thankfully!

wow! I never knew such a thing existed. I would NOT be comfortable at all with a situation like that!
  • we got the keys at our closing, but we told technically we're not supposed to get the keys until the attorney office registers the info with the town hall. They said it was fine because they went right to the town hall the same day
