Buying Obagi vs. Tri Luma

So, I had the most amazing facial at a med spa yesterday and they recommended Obagi for my skin.  Before I purchase it from them, is it cheaper to buy somewhere online?  Or do you prefer buying at dermatolgist or med spa?  I have some melasma and she mentioned using products with hydroquinone.  Just wondering if it better to go to dermatologist and get Tri Luma or try the Obagi line.

Re: Buying Obagi vs. Tri Luma

  • Also, would you suggest a starter kit?

  • I thought one should avoid products with hydroquinone!! I know that spas and medspas like to push products with hydroquinone, but Hydroquinone has now been banned in Europe and in many other countries, can only be prescribed by a doctor for certain skin conditions.

I had no idea about the potential cancer link and the other serious health stuff, but did know about the potential for discoloration.  This risk is mostly with dark skinned individuals, and other products like higher strength TCA peels also carry this risk and are best for use on those with a lighter complexion.

I never know how much concern I should have when I read that an experiment on rats caused cancer, as sometimes in these studies they give such ridiculously high doses/amounts to the rats.  That combined with the mercury level and adrenal gland studies would make me pause, though - especially since there are other methods to help with discoloration, such as prescription retinoids, chemical peels, and very effective laser treatments.

To the OP - I'm not familiar with Tri-Luma and have never used Obagi myself, but I have read a lot about Obagi and it's a very, very good brand.  Many dermatologists sell Obagi.  I've read some info about the product on realself.com.

You can find a lot more info by searching for Obagi on the realself site.

  • Oh, and I always shop around online to find products like this for less than they are at the dermatologist's office or a med spa.  I use Neova products that I purchase online.

  • i have used obagi for years and LOVE it!  i am constantly getting compliments on how my skin glows/looks healthy.  i buy it from my dermatologist.  it's the only thing i have found that really works and its worth it!
