# - Rascal Avoidance Club check-in

We need this especially after yesterday's Fat Tuesday thread. I gained 5 pounds just from reading the whole thread.

Share your progress!

Well, I'm proud to say I am a half-marathoner! Saturday's HM was such an awesome experience. The course was in Brooklyn along the water - it was a perfectly flat course, not a lot of runners but still very well-coordinated, and awesome post-race food lol. I had such a great time out there that I don't even care that I was gunning for a sub-2:00 and ran a 2:06 - although admittedly, I knew sub-2:00 was unrealistically ambitious after inconsistent training in April. First 5 miles were right on pace but the last 8 miles had the worst headwinds ever and I had to slow down a bit. I don't care though; it's an instant PR and I now have a time to improve upon.

Since I don't start formally training for the marathon until July, I was going to do easy running in May and June but now there's already several 5Ks and a 10K that I'd like to run this month and in June, but at least training for those won't be so grueling.

As for eating, yikes. I definitely need to stick with myfitnesspal.com just to make sure I'm taking in the right amount of food to maintain my weight. I've been eating everything in sight this week, and I've got BIL's wedding this weekend so I might as well start fresh on Monday.

Hope everyone else is having a good week!

  • Congrats on the half!  That is so exciting!  2:06 is amazing and is much faster than all the people who were on their couches while you were running (i.e. me).  And also much faster than all the people whose butts you whipped with that time!  Next up: sub 2:00!

I'm doing really well and I'm not sure how or why, but I'll take it!  Holding steady at 120 pounds, and pretty happy about it.  I've been running 6 mornings a week (usually I take off Thursdays without meaning to..it just ends up being the day I want to sleep in, and it isn't decided until that morning).  I'm up by 5:30 on weekdays and out the door a few minutes later for a 5-miler with the dog.

I finished my CrossFit "onramp" last week, so real WODs started this week.  I went Monday and Tuesday, and I am SORE!  But in a really good way.  The WODs sometimes seem impossible, so it's that much more satisfying to complete them.  I am really shocked at the confidence CF gives me.  Not just because I'm looking better/stronger, but because I'm doing things that I never thought I could do.  I'm so addicted...I'm turning into "that guy."  I think I'm really surprised at how much I'm enjoying it.

Food is the usual.  Been doing lots of protein shakes (got a blender bottle...gah, I'm so CrossFit-tastic), and that seems to be helping a lot with fatigue, satiety, and muscle building.  40 extra grams of protein a day is nothing to sneeze at!

  • Congrats, Marie!

I had cookies Monday and decided to start fresh for May yesterday.  I lifted weights for the first time in, um, I don't even want to think about it.  And I went for a 40-minute walk last night.  I did couch to 5k this morning.  Yesterday's lifting included squats stepups, and even though I only did bodyweight, oh gawd, I'm so sore.  I usually walk down the stairs in my apt building when I leave for work.  HAHA, I so took the elevator today.  Just the thought of going down the stairs makes me hurt.

I'm tracking my food and coming up with stuff that works.  I set my iPhone app to lose 2 pounds per week.  I only went 100 calories over yesterday, and I didn't wind up going to bed hungry.  This was the first time in a long time I was able to count calories and not give up halfway through the day due to hunger.

  • Marie - congrats on the half!

KatiesCats - way to go!  I didn't realize the Blender Bottles were a Crossfit thing.. I better watch out before I turn into that guy (I've owned one for over a year now and keep thinking about Crossfit).

I'm doing much better on the exercise although I can't afford to keep my trainer much longer, so I hope that he gave me the kick in the butt I needed.  I'm going to get him to help me modify NROL4W before our sessions are up.

My food intake has also been better.  I've cut back on sweets for the most part (please tell me a daily Luna Bar for breakfast is not too horrible), which was my biggest problem.  I'm trying  to have only 3 desserts a week and I've been good this past week.  I'm so glad I'm not that into alcohol. I'd much rather eat my calories!

ETA:  To add some specifics.  I did a boot camp thing on Saturday and apparently one of the other people asked the trainer if I was in sports or something because it didn't look that hard for me.  Anything involving jumping is usually easy for me due to my volleyball background.  Andplusalso my deadlift and squats are in triple digits!  I just started lifting again in April and didn't want to start out too high, so now I'm back to where I was in September and think I can relatively easily go up even more!  I'm hoping to get to 130 lbs deadlift in the next 2 sessions.

  • Good job everyone!

I'm getting more and more curious about CrossFit. I'm having so much trouble getting back into weightlifting because I know I can't lift heavy while marathon training but I know I need to do *something* - the key is that I can't just go to the gym and do random exercises. I have to go in and follow a program and there aren't many (if any) out there exclusively for runners. Essentially, I'm lazy and I need someone to make a program for me and at least CrossFit has that.

  • Congratulations Marie!  That's awesome!

Things are still going great here.  I fell off the food tracking wagon and I need to get back on, because I think I'm actually not eating enough.  Now that I've added to my workouts, I really need to see where I am and make sure I'm getting enough food.  I think I've been woefully short on protein over the last week, so I need to remember how to get enough in.

I'm on the semester break from my trainer, so I had to go to the regular weight room.  I learned last week that all the free weights from 20lbs - 40lbs are missing from the weight room because people stole them.  WTF?  I was so pissed off.  Why do you bother have students supervising the weight room?  I can't wait to get back to my trainer and the special room upstairs where I don't have to deal with that crap.

I had my first master's swim team workout Monday, and I loved it.  I go back today.  I did learn that since we swim outside, sunscreen is important.  I got so fried it's not even funny.

  • First of all - you suck Marie, that time is fricking amazing.

Now on to me: trying new food routine this week, am officially up 10 lbs over what I want to be. Have to find a new gym, thinking LA Fitness, five minutes from my office. They have lots of different classes and they sound fun. Got a three day pass to check it out and then we'll see.

  • Great job Marie!  Good luck with marathon training, I ended up gaining 10lbs while training for my first because I was ravenous all the time.

The DQ Blizzards every Sunday after my long run didn't help either.

I'm down 1.8 lbs this week. Party!!!

  • Hoorrayyyyy!! You are the awesome,Marie!!

I am doing really well managing food but no so much in the exercise department. The 10K is looming on 6/3 and I am not ready for it. I am overwhelmed at where to start. I am also jealous that DH has time to train for his half while I do not.

Look into the Female Body Breakthrough.  It's not as intense as NROL4W.  The author has an annoying grrrlll power! tone, but the actual set up of the book is better than NROL4W in my opinion.

  • congrats marie! bridey I'm glad you finding something that's working. I feel that's such I huge part of the puzzle.

I'm down 1.5 lbs this week and I'm hoping its not just a fluke. I sorta re-arranged my habits in an effort to curb all my cheating/craving that was happening so I'm hoping that it will stick.

If it isn't a fluke, its officially over 10lbs I've lost since I started in Jan. That's .5lbs away from my goal, and 2.5 lbs from my pre-pg weight. Hey, maybe i'll get there before DD is 3. lol Crying

  • Yay marie!

I'm riding bridey's train and starting fresh as of May Day. I walked a bit over 3 miles yesterday and I did the most ridiculous (but effective) kickboxing/dance workout last night. I even managed to hop on my LTT and do 10 min of stairs while H was in the shower this morning.

I'm only up a pound from my last weigh in two or three weeks back. I was thrilled to discover that since I was sure it was more.

  • After two months of cleaning up my diet and bumping up my exercise, I finally lost 1 pound.  1fuckingpound!  To be fair, I am just now starting to regain some sanity after several years of barely eating at all, followed by a decade or so of eating everything I could stuff in my face. I'm trying really hard to just get in tune with my body and develop a healthy relationship with food after all these years of abuse, and that part's going well.  I guess I just need to be happy with that for now.

Oh, and my foot is killing me since Sunday and I have no idea why.  Hurts to walk, hurts to sit, hurts to do anything.  I'm still going to try to make it through my zumba class this morning, though.

  • I am not seeing enough movement on the scale for how much work and how much less crap I'm eating. It's starting to bug me.

I've worked out 8 out of the 10 last days. I've lost one pound. ugh.

I feel stronger, so that's plus.

Marie - congrats on the half marathon!

  • Question: I've heard a lot about couch to 5k, but I have a policy on running (only when something is chasing me or I'm going to have to pay daycare $10/min I'm late). Is there something like this that's for anything but running?

I think the same program could be applied to power or speed walking.

I don't know if you have access to a stationery bike or pool, but I'm sure you could do that too (although timing may be harder swimming).  The idea is just to have intervals of working harder (running) vs working less hard (walking).

There's the Zombies, Run! app. It's an audio game that you listen to and get instructions from while running/walking. And sometimes you hear zombies chasing you and you have to run faster.

ETA, this is meant to satisfy your 'only running when chased' qualifier. lol.

  • I have a stair machine. You think that would work?

  • Great job, folks! Crossfit people like Katie'sCats--is crossfit something you can only do at one of their gyms, or do people do it at any gym? I see a group of people taking turns doing deadlifts during my runs--is that an element of crossfit? The only female doing them with all of these dudes is a badass female trainer. I would love to be as ripped as she is.

I have done both runs of my 10k training program this week, and the real challenge is going to be the four miles on Friday. Fingers crossed that LilShirley sleeps a bit better over the next few days so that I can get some energy!

    I am serious...and don't call me Shirley.
  • I'm still waiting on the Android release myself. Mesh, I think you can do it on the treadmill, so stairclimber should work.

    Congrats Marie!

I lost another lb this week!  Eating more calories and getting more sleep I think is the reason for the scale moving again.  This also means I've met my first weight goal!  From here on out my focus will be more on losing inches instead of lbs.

I started using more of the weight training ideas from New Rules of Lifting for Women and New Rules of Lifting for Abs.  And I definitely feel a difference the day after I weight train compared to what I was doing.  And push-ups?!?!?  The most under-rated exercise ever.

I also started Butt Bible Lower Level 3 this week.  My @ss is killing me and it's been 2 days since I did it.  I love the results I've gotten from Level 1 & 2 in only 4 weeks, so I highly recommend it!

Also, I found the most amazing Pumpkin Protein Muffin recipe.  Tastes like a normal pumpkin muffin, but is much healthier.  Lots of protein, low carb (and good carb at that) with less than 100 calories per muffin.  Recipe for everyone:

These are only 93 calories (may vary according to your protein powder), 7 carbs, 1 fat, and 13 protein! This makes 12 muffins. You can add almonds on top, or throw in some dark chocolate chips.  Both add some extra calories, but not much!

    Preheat oven to 375F

    Combine:

-1 cup of oatmeal processed in a blender/food processor into flour. *1 cup BEFORE it is processed, it will be less afterwards*
    - 5 scoops of vanilla protein powder. * I have done a mixture of chocolate and vanilla before and that was great too*
    - 1 tsp Baking Powder
    - 1.5 tsp of cinnamon *This is an estimate. Adjust to your liking.*
    - 1.5 tsp of pumpkin pie spice * Again, an esitmate. Adjust to your liking.*
    - Egg whites from 3 large eggs.
-1 cup of Libby's pure pumpkin
    - 1/2 cup of no sugar added apple sauce

Mix all ingredients.  Bake at 375F for 15-20 minutes depending on oven.

    Enjoy!!
