Running a 5k with both my kids, tips?

I have my first 5k of the year on Saturday and I am getting very nervous. It's for my 6yr old DDs school so she is running it with me. I was planning on pushing my 3yr old DS in the jogger but he wants to run with us. Should I register him and bring the jogger or just plan on him running/walking? Kids 6 & under are free but need to be registered.

Also, any tips on preparing my kids?  I have another 5k next month that the kids will do with me as well.

Re: Running a 5k with both my kids, tips?

  • take your jogger for your 3 year old.  I don't see a 3 year old (and I have a 3.5 year old) being able to run for 3.1 miles.

Other than that, let your 6 year old set the pace and just start behind the runners.  Good luck!

  • How awesome that your kids are interested in running with you!

I would not register your three year old. I would bring the jogger and let him do a combination of running/riding.

My older DS and I have done 3 5Ks together.  I always bring along fruit snacks to eat along the way, and we have a little walk/drink break at the water station.  We didn't to a lot of training beforehand.  We maybe jogged twice to his school and ran around his track a few times in preparation for the first one.

    Have fun!

  • My 3 year old would not be able to run 3.1 miles.  He'd run for the first 10 minutes or so, and then stop to pet a dog, get thirsty, investigate an ant hill, need to rest, etc etc.  Walking anywhere with him takes an eternity, let alone a set course I'm trying to "race."  I'd bring a stroller for the little guy for sure.  I'd just let your 6 year old set the pace, and start behind everyone who looks like they'll really be racing/running.  Have fun!  How cool that your kids are joining in.
  • Take the jogger. Omg take the jogger!!!! I just ran a 2k with a 4 year old and it was pretty miserable for both of us. We walked pretty much all of it, and he whined the entire time. I promise you will both be happier if you take the jogger.

  • Thanks ladies! I'm excited but pretty nervous. My first two 5ks I ran with a friend, this time it's just me and the kiddos. Hoping DH will come to cheer us on.
