How many references do you ask for?

I'm just curious to see how to go about this. I have a season job that I will return to after the summer. But I might try to get something for the summer when I'm off from my regular job. I have already asked my boss for a reference but should I also ask the COO for one? Am I overdoing it or is as many references as possible maybe better? (I'm also thinking it's good to have for future reference:)

Re: How many references do you ask for?

  • If future employers ask for references, they'll usually ask for 3. Usually from a former employer, colleague and maybe a past professor.

  • I always thought it's better to be prepared and have a few references if it's not a big deal asking for them. I'm sure every situation/work place is different. Or maybe it's important that they are very currant?

Yes, 3 is always the "magic" number I've heard/seen too.
