Going to Cozumel in June:)

We are using our cc points for travel so we are staying at the Cozumel grand occidental I think is what it's called. Anyone ever stayed there? It's an all inclusive and I think my husband said its adults only too, what do y'all reccomend to do in Cozumel. We are leaving on Monday and coming back Friday. Thank you for your input:)

Re: Going to Cozumel in June:)

  • Amber - I hope you love it.  But I've stayed there, and personally I was miserable.  My husband and I went in Sept/Oct 08.  The rooms, beach and staff were fine, but not too impressive.  Our major complaints were the food and mosquitos.

The food was tasteless and repeated at every meal.  We didn't get sick, but didn't care to eat too much after seeing the same food served over and over again.  We were there during off season, so hopefully they do more with the food during the summer.

The mosquitos were unbearable.  The hotel has shallow ponds all over the grounds and a major drainage ditch that you cross over to get to the beach.  The combination is ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  Despite applying OFF several times a day, I left Cozumel with over 100 bites on my body.  I seem to be a prime target for mosquitoes, but even my husband who does not generally get bitten was overwhelmed with bites.  Hopefully this is a seasonal issue as well.

If you read the tripadvisor reviews, the Occidental seems to be more polarizing than other hotels. Maybe I'm just one of the picky ones, but we've been to many other tropical locations and I've been happy everywhere else.  If we go back to Cozumel I would pick to stay at the Iberostar next door.

Our favorite activity was a snorkeling trip with Alberto's.  Alberto's is a little seafood restaurant located between the Occidental and Iberostar.  You can walk over there and ask them about times for a snorkeling trip.

We also rented a car and drove to the other side of the island.  We stopped at Coconuts for lunch and really enjoyed it.

  • Rent a scooter and ride around the island, the backside of the island is so different from the cruise ship side. . Like the pp mentions, stop at Coconuts, it's really cool and has a beautiful view. You can also take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen and walk around 5th Avenue.
  • Definitely take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen.  You can walk around and shop there, eat lunch, etc.  The beach is beautiful there!

Also consider booking a tour to the ruins at Tulum.  There are many tours that leave from Cozumel, take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen (included in cost) and drive you to the ruins.  It's an amazing experience, and a great way to fit a bit of history into a relaxing vacation.

Take a look at Viator.com, as they have tours.  Or contact your hotel to see if they offer anything.

There's also a place on Cozumel where you can swim with dolphins.  :)

  • We really liked Chankanaab Park, a fun eco-park with great snorkeling and a beautiful beach.

I second this, this was my favorite part of Cozumel.  I also loved the days we would rent a car and drive around the island, stopping at different beaches and restaurants throughout the day.  It was fantastic.  We also took the ferry over to Playa del Carmen (bring dramamine, that ferry SUCKS every time!) and walked around 5th ave and then drove ourselves to Tulum.  You could do a tour too if you would rather not drive yourself.

Try to eat out of the resort, as I think most resorts have shittastic food, and the restaurants in Cozumel are excellent.

  • As other posters mentioned I would also suggest driving to the other side of the island. We spent a day doing this and it was our favorite part of the trip. We drove along the coast and made multiple stops where we had the beach all to ourselves. There are also restaurants/bars and road side stands you can stop at along the way.
