Retin A: Where do you put it on your face?

I've been on Retin A/Tretinoin for almost 8 months now, but am not good about being consistent on using it. I'm past the peeling/redness phase (thank goodness).

Currently, I place Retin A on the following places on my face:

  • Forehead
  • Area b/w eyebrows
  • Area b/w nose and upper lip
  • Laugh lines
  • Crow's feet
  • Neck- I mix night cream and some Retin A to put on my neck (since it burned/got red and itchy when I put Retin A by itself on the neck)
  • Cheeks- though they get somewhat red and I wonder if I need to continue putting Retin A on my cheeks?
  • Backs of hands (2-3x/week)

Do you place it anywhere else on the face? Or, am I placing it on places where I shouldn't be?

Re: Retin A: Where do you put it on your face?

  • All over ...I just use a teeny tiny amount

  • I also put it all over.  I only do the back of my hands and my neck and chest occasionally, though, because I don't want to have to use sunscreen on those areas daily.  I actually apply fairly liberally between my eyebrows and on my nose, as those areas have never had any sensitivity or even peeling from the Retin-A.  Then on the rest of my face I apply lightly.  The only area on my face I don't apply it to is my eyelids and up to my brows.
  • All over as well. I need to be better about hands and chest though.

I had no idea about the chest-- does it even get wrinkly there?

Oh, yeah.  The chest will eventually get crepey looking with age.  Like Kate Moss' (not that she looks bad).

Got it, thanks. I just started putting it in the crow's feet area and after an hour, it gets dry and feels tight. Should I start putting eye cream on it after Retin A?

  • Yes, put it on your hands and chest and neck!! I wish I had done this earlier.  My face is looking pretty good, all things considered, but my chest and hands show my age.  They were fine until 37-38 or so, then things started changing.

To answer the original question, I use it all over, except near my eyes.  I use ROC retinol under eye stuff for the eye area and it is great (albeit not nearly as strong as Retin A, but that is ok).

Out of curiosity, why do you not put it on the corner of your eyes?

  • All over except under my eyes. I also put it on my neck, chest, and back of my hands.

Clevebride, I've read that it's too harsh on the delicate under-eye skin. It can eventually cause thinning of that skin, which you certainly don't want!

It dried me out near my eyes too much, even when combined with moisturizer.  I guess my skin is more delicate there, which may be an age thing.  Because it doesn't bother me anywhere else.  The ROC line of products is definitely worth checking out, IMO, if you don't want to/can't afford to use straight up RetinA.  I saw instant results.
