Atlanta Recommedations??

We are headed to ATL the first wekeend in June for 3 days.  We are staying at the Mariott Marquis downtown.

it will be me, DH, 6yr old DS flying in.  we're meeting my brother, SIL and their kids (10 and 11) - they are driving from Greenville, SC.

We are planning on the aquarium one day and the new Legoland Center another day.  What else would be great family activities?

Should we rent a car?  it looks like there is a MARTA stop at the hotel from the airport and the aquarium is only 5 blocks from the hotel - so walkable.  thoughts?

Re: Atlanta Recommedations??

  • I live in Atlanta. The aquarium is great. The world of Coca Cola can also be fun. It's the history of the soda but also has a fun tasting room of soda from all over the world. Those are located off Centennial Olympic park. Which has a fun water fountain for kids to play in. You can walk to those.I haven't been to Lego Land yet it just opened it looks fun. You could also see if the braves are in town a baseball game with kids can be a lot of fun. Our Zoo is also nice.

You mentioned taking Marta. For most people Atlanta is a driving city. We drive almost everywhere. It also means traffic can be brutal. I live near our "Central Park" Piedmont Park so have a more walk-able area than most parts of the city.

The places you mentioned you can take Marta. The Lenox stop would be where Lego Land is, if you aren't used to walking it will be a long walk from the station to Lego land. So if what you want to do is off the Marta lines and you are here for a few days it would be easiest.

Since you are with kids, Mellow Mushroom Pizza would be a good place for dinner. It's a local chain with great pizza. If you or your DH drink beer try Sweetwater it's brewed here in Atlanta. It's a few blocks North of your hotel.

Have fun and bring sunblock. It's usually hot and sunny in June. :)

  • Thank you for all the suggestions!   we will definitely give Sweetwater beer a try!
  • Yeah, you would need to get off at Lenox, and then LegoLand is in Phipps. I would highly, highly recommend getting tickets in advance. Also, right now, the only food in Phipps that isn't a sit down restaurant is Moe's, and they are adding a Subway and Johnny Rockets. You can't take food into LegoLand, but they sell food there, and it isn't very good and is quite pricey.

The children's museum is right by the Aquarium, as is the Coke Museum. Fernbank is an awesome museum but you would need a car.

  • DH had a business conference and stayed at the Marquis last year so I tagged along with my daughters.  We spent a few days outside of Atlanta and rented a car before his conference... but we used the train to get back to the airport and it was no problem at all.  While we were staying at the Marquis, I walked with my girls to the Aquarium- they loved it- and spent some time at the Olympic Park as well- they loved the fountains!

  • I would rent a car.  MARTA really sucks and you will be very limited on where you will be able to go.  You could make it work if you really hated the idea of renting a car, but there are a LOT of places that Marta doesn't go.

The CNN studio tour is interesting.   The kids would probably enjoy the Tullie Smith Farm at the Atlanta History Center.

The birth home of MLK, Jr. is also cool   http://www.nps.gov/malu/index.htm

  • I also second Fernbank. Stone Mountain Park is also a great place to take the kids. They will love the laser show. You would need a car to get there. I would definitely rent a car rather than take Marta. You can explore a lot more of Atlanta and not be limited in what you can do. If you like fondue, Dante's Down the Hatch is very cool place!

  • If you do decide to rent a car, double check parking at your hotel.  It was $25/night when DH had his conference there last year. If you are only going to need the car for a few short trips, you could always look into doing a ZIpcar if you have a membership.  We got ours on Groupon and it was a free membership with a driving credit.  We used it when we were in San Francisco.  Have fun!  The others have given you some great recs.
