Driving from Adelaide to Melbourne - Itinerary Help

I found that it is about $150 cheaper to rent a car from Adelaide - Melbourne instead of the reverse. So I flipped my trip around.

Please help with my plan for a 4 day drive from Adelaide to Melbourne. I basically took pieces of various tours and combined them into one trip. If there are must see places I am missing or any other input I would greatly appreciate it.

Adelaide - Coonawarra - drive through Keith for lunch, Naracoorte caves, Coonawarra wine region

Coonawarra - Dunkeld - Mt. Gambier, Port Fairy, Tower Hill Reserve, London Bridge, Bay of Martyrs, and Bay of Islands. I know this is a detour, but I was to stay at the Royal Mail Hotel and have dinner there.

Dunkeld - Apollo Bay - Twelve Apostles (Port Campbell), Loch Ard Gorge, Otway National Park

Apollo Bay - Melbourne - golfing at Anglesea Golf Course. This is all I have planned so far because I know my H is going to want to golf and it is going to take several hours. He will want an early tee time or closer to when the sun is going down.

So how does this sound? Am I trying to see too much on certain days? Also if you have any recs on places to stay please give them.

My entire trip will be 3 days Kangaroo Island, 4 days driving from Adelaide to Melbourne, 2 days in Melbourne (1 day tennis), 3 days Sydney, and 3 days Cairns. I have not decided if I want to take Sydney out completely (there is a restaurant there I want to go to). If I do take it out I will add a day in Melbourne and maybe a day to the drive from Adelaide to Melbourne. Don't know yet.

Thanks for all your help.

  • Keith is a good lunch stop. You could get a pie at the bakery http://www.southaustralia.com/info.aspx?id=9006495 or a steak sandwhich at the road house.

You won't be able to fit in all that stuff in an afternoon between noonish in Keith via the 12 apostles and bedtime in the Grampians. Adelaide to Keith around 3 hours, half an hour for lunch, then it's around 1 hour to Padthaway for wine tasting, take an hour wine tasting. Then half an hour to Naracoorte, say an hour at the caves, and it's 5pm. I would look for a great restaurant and B&B or hotel in the Coonawarra for that night.

You could possibly detour from Mt Gambier to Dunkeld the next day and then drop down to the coast at Portland or Warrnambool, but the restaurant would have to be beyond phenomenal, because it's about an hour and a half from Mt Gambier, then probably another two hours down to Portland. I've only approached the Grampians from Ararat and Stawell, but it's flat and monotonous. IMO an extra half day spent wine tasting would be better.

For the great ocean road portion, we did it in a long day in the opposite direction and stayed in Mt Gambier for the night. Technically it's 250km from Torquay to Port Fairy, but you won't be going anywhere near 100kph, and you'll be stopping a lot, and taking little walks down to the beach or off into the rainforest at Cape Otway. I think that Coonawarra to Torquay in one day isn't unreasonable.

Is there any particular reason your husband wants that golf course? You could find one close to somewhere you want to spend the night fairly easily anywhere. Although, Lorne is a nice town, you could stay there.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks for the info. I think if this trip ends up being just myself and H we might make the detour to Dunkeld, but if the group goes we will just take it out.

As for the golf course he does not care. I just thought that one was nice and it seemed like it was on the way along GOR. Maybe not. I saw a whole list of golf courses, is there another you can recommend?

  • I'm not a golfer, I don't know, but I'll bet you can find a nice one near somewhere you'll be staying anyway IYKWIM.
