We are going to Munich Germany and Zurich
switzerland in august. My question is where did you rent from and what is an absolute must (ie insurance, automatic etc)? Basically what is require to so this is painless and easy.
Re: Renting a car in Germany
We use skyscanner.com to find the best rates. Out of Munich airport that was Thrifty. We had a very good experience with them and they even upgraded us to a Mercedes A class (the tiniest car you'll ever see but it was perfect for what we needed and the smaller the better in Europe).
We never got insurance through the rental company because we bought it through USAA for like $5 a month (at the time neither of drove regularly nor did we have a car so we purchased a plan that would cover us if we were driving someone else's car or had a rental and it was very very very cheap).
We both knew how to drive stick so that wasn't a problem. You can find automatic but it is going to be more expensive as most rentals in Europe are stick. Also, picking up from Munich and returning to Zurich is going to probably double the daily cost of the car.
Everytime we've been to Europe we've rented through Europcar & have never had an issue. They are at all of the major airports & priced well. We just had the insurance through my DH's corperate amex. We had a little mishap in Austria & everything was covered.
Also if you are driving through Switzerland, don't forget to get a vignette! Enjoy your trip!
Ditto the vignette they are 40 CHF this year. (It's a sticker placed on the wind shield) If the car is rented in Switzerland they will already have them. You can get them at the Gas station or when you cross the boarder into Switzerland.
Enjoy Zurich, I miss the place dearly.
