Jogging stroller questions

I was generously gifted a jogging stroller from my SIL last year that she never used (Kelty Kids).  However, it doesn't have a swivel front wheel and that makes it a real biiitch to take out on neighborhood runs.

What is the "shelf life" for toddlers when it comes to enjoying rides during a run?  I don't want to invest money in a new stroller if he won't sit in it much longer.

Anyone have input on a how long/what age their kids were still interested in the jogging stroller?

Also, I'm pushing a 33 lb not-quite two year old.  Is there a "light weight" option for these strollers in case I'm in the market to buy?  Suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Jogging stroller questions

  • For running, you actually want a locked front wheel.  It's safer.

Re shelf life, I think that really depends on the kid.  My daughter would have happily sat in the jogger forever.  She's 5, and I bet if she still fit I could still take her.  My son was over it by about 2 and would get bored, squirmy, want to walk, etc.  He just turned 3 and hasn't been in a stroller in over a year.  How is your son about other strollers?

  • It is actually safer to run with a locked front wheel. That said, I just can't do it. The streets here are very curvy and it is too difficult to keep my stride when I am constantly battling the stroller to turn. So I run with the swivel wheel and use the tether and never take a hand off the handle (not that you would do that anyway...I'm just saying I don't do it for a single second).

DD #1 is over 4 years old and she still enjoys going out for runs. However, she is small (~35 lbs), so pushing her is still manageable. I don't know at what rate your son will keep growing, but I can see that getting cumbersome as he gets heavier. DD #2 absolutely loves going for runs also, so if you are planning to have another child, I'd go ahead and sink some money into a good stroller. We had a Jeep jogger for a while and hated it. When I was pregnant with #2 we decided to bite the bullet and get a BOB Revolution since we'd get several more years use out of it. It is amazing. I can't believe I ever ran with anything else.

  • I have a Baby Jogger Summit XC Double. I have a 2 yo and almost 4 year old and they both still love to go running with me.
  • I have a Phil & Ted's Sport with a doubles kit and run with the wheel fixed.  But it's the width of a single stroller and very easy to turn, even in the fixed position.

I ran on Monday with my 35lb 3.5 year old and 20 lb 1.5 year old and they both still love it.  I'm actually hoping to get a single Bob Ironman this summer so when I have just DD#1 on Wednesdays we can do some really long runs together.

  • i am about to go running with my kids - they are nearing 3.  its almost easier now that they are older because they can bring a book for longer runs and entertain themselves.

i wouldnt worry about weight, i push over 90 pounds!  the weight actually adds more momentum so its not *really* like pushing 90 pounds though, with the exception of going uphill.

  • DS is almost 4 and weighs 38lbs, and I still take him comfortably in our BabyTrend jogger. It's smaller than the Kelty I borrowed from a friend, and under $100 at Target if you are looking for a new one.

As he's gotten older, I've had to get more creative with what I give him for entertainment, and started bribing him with trips to the playground at the end of our runs, but those are minor bumps in the road when it means I get to run and not find a babysitter or wait for DH to get home!

My one tip is to invest in some snack cups and straps to hold them. I've strapped an entire lunch--including drink--to DS's stroller before, so I could do a longer run with him. Snack cups rock. :)

  • I forgot to fix the wheel on my BOB one day, and it started to flip on the first turn I took. I won't make that mistake again.

I was still taking both of my older kids out at 3 & 5. I just had to get them out to run a bit too. We also brought books and video games. They would probably still be okay in it, but I was not about to get a triple.

  • My kid is almost 2 and has been resisting going on long runs lately. I usually have to stop for breaks at playgrounds. I think it really depends on the kid.
