Rascal Avoidance - Let's talk about Cross Fit
First - is anyone already doing the program?
There are four different cross fit places around me. The one closes calls themselves the Crossfit rebels. I like the sound of that! It looks pretty hard core on the web site though. Rope climb - seriously? I'm having bad flashbacks to field day back in middle school.
Slainte!

$200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yea - that's not happening.

Aside from the price being ridiculous, I don't understand it. How is a seven minute workout effective? It doesn't seem sustainable or progressive.
You repeat the workout a few times, I think.
It is really expensive, there are some Health and Fitness nesties that do it and love it. I think they'd say the price is worth it.
I think it's more about the diet just like Boot Camp.
It is an hour long, so I am assuming you do the "work out of the day" multiple times.

I started CrossFit about three weeks ago and I love it. I get a military discount (they give it to dependents where I live) and pay a little less than $200 but I feel it is absolutely worth it.
Example of the workout: my class starts at 6 and for about 5-10 minutes we have a pretty intense warm up, then we spend 15-20 on technique work (getting movements down properly and slowly), and then the W.O.D. (workout of the day) is anywhere from 9-15 minutes depending on what we are doing (you go hard and fast...no "getting a sip of water and taking your time" between sets). Then we have a 5-10 minute cooldown.
The attention that is given to me during the class is what makes it worth it to me. I need someone to guide and motivate me. It's like a semi-personal trainer for me and I really like it. I go three times a week and it comes to about $14/class...that's as much as I would pay for a yoga class in my area.
Additionaly, I actually push myself vs. when I would go to the gym by myself I wouldn't work nearly as hard as I do in the 45 minutes of CrossFit. I also think that I like it because the atmosphere and set up it reminds me of the years I was in the military.
I've already noticed strength coming back and I feel so good after I leave there. Everyone is really nice and helpful. I've never looked forward to working out more than I do now that I've started CrossFit. I think most boxes do a free trial class before you sign up. I recommend doing it and finding a box that fits your personality and needs...some can be a little over the top.
It's not a 7-minute workout. It generally takes an hour, maybe longer. The philosophy of it is that it is functional movements at high intensity and reps.
So you show up, you stretch and warm up, and then you work on a skill. On Tuesday, we worked on squat snatches. We did 7 sets of 3. We also did sets of dumbbell hops (heavy dumbbells in each hand, swing them back, then as you pull them forward, leap forward yourself, repeat).
Then we got to the workout. It was 10 atomic situps (squat, lay back, hands with 15-pound dumbbell go above head and touch mat, hands back forward to chest, stand), 10 kettlebell swings, 10 push presses with dumbbells, 10 pushups, 10 toes to bar (hang from pullup bar, touch bar with toes), and 10 pullups. Repeat 4 times. It took me almost 20 minutes of extremely intense work.
I pay $120 a month, and wish it were less, but I do believe it's worth it. I've lost weight, gained a lot of muscle, made friends, and have gotten a LOT stronger. Not only do I have confidence in my appearance (which has always been lacking), but confidence in my ability to do things. I've done things in CF that I literally did not believe I could do. I tried to take weight off my bar a few weeks ago and told the coach there was no way I could finish at that weight. He told me I was wrong, that he knew I could do it. And he watched me finish. It was awesome, and very confidence-building.

This sounds wick hard core to me...a little more than I want actually. Eh I'll try it and see how it goes.
