Need advice for getting my cat to chill out

I've had my cat his whole life (12 amazing years), and successfully added another kitty to the clan.  She is now 10.  Neither of them like our new dog, but the male cat goes out of his way to antagonize the dog.  I know theres some jealousy going on, and I do make it a point to have kitty only time, and kitty only places in the house.  Ay other suggestions for getting things smoothed over?

Re: Need advice for getting my cat to chill out

  • Have you tried feliway or a calming collar? Has your kitty been to the vet recently? Do they have a tall cat condo or cat tree to give them vertical distance from the dog?

  • One of our cats is dog aggressive.  We use feliway and have cat only spaces like his cat tree and a babygated cat room where he can go relax and be the king when he needs to calm down.

  • It's not a medical issue, as he is up to date and has had a checkup recently, with bloodwrk and urinalysis coming up great.

They do have vertical spaces to use, but I think a kitty condo might help too.  Do you really think the feliway works? I used it when we moved, and didn't really think it did anything for either of our cats.

For us, absolutely yes, two of my cats NEED it.  I used to think it didn't help much, until my cat turned into a flipping terror over night and I realized they were out.  Our third is little ms. lala land anyway so it doesn't affect her.

Some cats have serious preferences on what constitutes private space.  I would try a few options and see which he prefers...he might like being up high, or he might prefer having a cozy hiding space.

ETA:  you may want to try prescription meds as a last ditch resort.

  • Ditto Kellbell. One of our cats turns into a she-demon (or at least more of one), whenever we're out of Feliway. It's something we plan on always using. For less than $.50/day, it's worth it to us.
