Why, you ask, am I asking about a work issue while I'm mat leave? Yeah, interesting isn't it.
Background - at the hospital we typically have 4 on call shifts monthly. We are paid an hourly rate and then a flat fee for every call we take and answer. We log these in a binder and then we are paid out the next month once management goes through them.
Well, remember when my work sucked and kept having me take on calls at like 38 weeks pregnant? When I realized I was going to leave work on April 13th, I e-mailed my manager and requested that I get paid for the 2 on call shifts I worked early since I would be terminated during my mat leave and they wouldn't be able to pay me a month later. Even if they could pay me the next month, employment insurance would have thought I worked while collecting (even those this money is from shifts worked April 1st and 2nd) and would have taken that money off my mat leave entitlement.
I am owed about $200.
Well, my manager e-mailed me back after I asked to get paid on my last check and said payroll said it would be on my next check. Dude, I'm not getting a next check. Well, that would have been today. Checked my account...no money. E-mailed manager. Her response is that payroll said they can't pay me because it would affect my mat leave pay. Yeah, I fricking knew that and that's why I tried to get paid early. Jackfuucks.
So, payroll's solution is that they will hold onto the money and pay me when I get back in April 2013, what do I think of that?
What would you do? I mean, there is no way at this point for them to pay me which sucks. I worked my pregnant butt off on call and tried to get the monies owed since I knew this would be a problem. But I'm pretty much stuck right now and that sucks.
I think I'm going to e-mail them back and make sure they outline exactly how much I am going to get paid IN A YEAR so I have it in writing but I think that's all I can do. Blah!
Re: A work WWYD...
I agree. You should definately get it in writing. (Like a contract type thing), and be sure they sign it. That is BS.
I will admit I am super jealous that you Canadian ladies get 1 year off for maternity. My 6 weeks after the boys were born, were not clearly enough!

Really? You found them helpful? I've been trying to call them for over a week now on an unrelated matter and whenever I press zero for an operator I get told "due to a high volume of calls, we cannot transfer your call at this time" so I can't get anyone on the phone. It's ridiculous. I've been trying for a week at various times of the day throughout the day and no one is every available.
re: retro pay - not sure how that works out because my payroll is telling me that EI would deduct that as if I had worked and, also, I've been 'terminated' and my ROE is already done and everything.
I really don't know how the Canadian system works (or the US system for that matter) but I personally would keep trying to find a way to get paid now. It sounds like BS that they can't pay you for work you've already done, no matter whether you are now on mat leave or "terminated" or whatever. And it seems very strange to me that money for work done prior to your maternity leave would come out of your allowance; there must be a workaround to that. Plenty of people only get paid monthly - would no one be able to collect their final paycheck if it came after their baby was born?
Also, I'm willing to bet that even if you agree to have it added onto your first paycheck next year, you're still going to end up having to fight for it. I'd rather fight for it now and get it over with.
That's because my husband has been tying up their phones with his phone calls all week. =P They are really helpful.
You would think they could just back date the cheque... honestly, I'd insist on having the money now, not in a year's time. Tell them the solution doesn't work for you, it's their problem and they have to fix it.
