We just got back from our first trip to Europe, to Amsterdam, and the train ticketing system confused me. Oh, buying tickets was easy enough, but were we supposed to give our tickets to someone or something? We bought tickets each time we took the train to/from the airport, but no one ever checked them and I didn't see signs indicating what to do with them. I still have all of our train tickets in my purse.
It seems like many people could just ride the train for free, no?

Lol, we had the same thing happen to us, which is probably good because the first time we bought the tickets I'm certain I bought the wrong ones. I purchased the discount tickets thinking "he!! yes I want a discount" and later I realized that was totally wrong.
MyValentine - I have a similar pic as your siggy, as I'm sure a lot of people do

LOL- A FB friend/fellow Nestie told me that she has a similar pic on her living room wall. I love this gargoyle guy but some of them were actually really scary-looking!

I didn't mean that it actually was the honor system. It just seemed that way at first because we didn't get our tickets checked.

MH won trips around the world through Yahoo in July of 2010- it's all in my very first blog post!
We get 4 trips per year beginning in Jan 2011-December 2014 for him and one guest to anywhere in the world that we can find a sporting event.
We basically find places we want to go and then hope we can find a sporting event!
That's funny Berlin and Amsterdam are mentioned in this post because these are the only 2 cities in my experience where I felt like they don't check as often.
Our Amsterdam guide book actually said something along the lines like, "You may think you'll be able to get away with riding the train for free, but if caught, there will be huge fines."
I'm sure it's an issue/misconception since this is the only city where they talked about this in some detail.
It is not free or an honor system. There are conductors on every train and it just whether or not they make it to your car while you are on the train. I worked at schiphol but lived at zuid and before getting an annual pass would forget to stop an stamp my ticket all the time when I was in a rush and got two or three tickets from jerk conductors (some conductors would just stamp for me and cut me a break because I had weeks worth of stamped tickets int wallet). The fine is about 59e. Now that is an honor system because they ask for your passport. Although you are required by law to carry around that or your Dutch identity card I never did so they would just ask for my name and address. I could have given them fake info and never did. My husband did one night when a cop pulled him over for not having his bike headlight working. Nothing ever came of that.
Officials would "raid" the trams to make sure you had a ticket. They would stop in the middle of the street open the doors and like 10 dudes would get on and check everyone's tickets.
Qe were riding the metro one day and husband forgot to he a ticket. The officials hoped on our metro and asked to see tickets. Husband didn't have one so they asked for cash to sell him a ticket. He didnt have cash so they got off at next stop win him an escorted him to ticket machine and watched him buy one. I would rather then a 50e ticket!
Although really if you did get a ticket they aren't going to come after you in the US for it.
