Lifting

So I've pretty much just started half training after doing a 10k recently. I love running and it is my focus right now.

I just reached my weight loss goal but know that I still have some fat to lose, so I thought I would try to up my calories and do lifting, and I started doing Chalean Extreme.

Because running is my goal, though, I find that the 3x a week lifting doesn't always happen. If I'm feeling down or crappy, I will run over doing weights.

I think that doing weights 3x a week sounds perfect, but 2x a week seems more doable to me. Do you think 2x a week would be enough to see any type of progress or benefit? If you don't know Chalean Extreme, I'm on phase 2 so I am lifting heavy and doing between 6-8 reps for about 30 mins (mix between upper and lower each time).

So do you think I could do 2x a week instead of 3? Would it be beneficial? I would love to just run but I can recognize that my body needs more in regards to muscle.

Re: Lifting

  • I haven't done that particular program, but I do strength training twice a week and it works very well for me. I've seen definite improvements in my strength.

  • I think 2x a week is great with all your other training. Rest is an important part of seeing results. That said, while I liked Chalean, it wasn't my favorite program. I felt she spent too much time on smaller muscles. You will notice a difference but its just not the most bang for your buck in my experience. I really like Female Body Breakthrough (done by the wife of the guy who did NROLW) but the moves are harder to get right and they do involve more equipment.
  • If you can only do two days you can only do two days, two days are better than none. I normally do weights two days and still see an impact.
  • for me ideal is 2 days of lifting 3 days of running 1 day of yoga and one day pod rest. I see results and I'm doing what I like

  • Thanks a lot for the information. After I'm done Chalean I might look around for another program- I would love to do NROLFW but I only workout at home and only have heavy dumbells.

With my half training I run about 4x a week so one of my lifting days is on an easy run day, which gives me 2 days of rest, which I find is a lot considering I was only taking 1 day off when I was losing weight.

  • I did 3 days of lifting, 2 days of running, and 2 days of rest when I started NROLFW, but I found that my body didn't recover enough between lifting workouts and my running was suffering, so I switched to 2 days of lifting and 3 days of running.  It's a much better balance for me, and I still got great results from lifting.
