Anyone following the KY Derby?

Re: Anyone following the KY Derby?

  • a horse.   The jockey's don't stand a chance.

  • the front page of the paper today tells me Bodemeister is now the favorite.  Since the favorite hardly ever wins, I say not that one.

I have heard good things about Daddy Nose Best and I'll Have Another.

  • I have no idea! Although I like that in horse racing you can just go with whoever has good odds and usually do okay for yourself. I haven't really looked into the horses, yet.

Can we talk more about the Derby, though? I do like to watch, but I feel really conflicted about horse racing in general. The fact that horses are bred to be so muscular with such spindly legs, and how that really has a negative effect on the animals. And how much I sobbed after they had to euthanize Eight Belles after the Derby in 2008.

  • DH does. I'll have to get his picks. Though he's sworn off Derby betting this year so maybe its a sore subject.

ETA: Dh says Bodemeister BUT he hasn't even run as a 2 year old BUT apparently he killed the competition before that. It can be a good thing Triple Crown-wise to have a horse that fresh going into the Derby cuz they are less likely to wear out before the hell that is the Belmont.

As a horse/animal lover, I disagree with it on the basis of commercial breeding, overpopulation, and bad genetic breeding in general. I also disagree with the lifestyle they give the horses (retired at 5 - 9 years old?!?!).

I don't necessarily disagree with racing as a sport in the most technical of senses in that you could do it in a way that horses could have longer careers and not base so much of it on the young/breeding/studding.

There is also a lot of humane things they are not up to snuf on (what passes legally for humane in general in our country in BS) in terms of track surfaces, steroids/drugs, diet, vet care, etc.

Read up on what it take to convert a race horse into a "normal" riding horse and you'll see how mis-nurtured they are.

  • I'm still on the Union Rags bandwagon. I feel bad for Daddy Long Legs for drawing the 1-hole....and Liason who is in the 20. I kind of wish his connections had withdrawn him like the connections of Mark Valeski. I'm a big Baffert fan so I don't think he'd run a horse in the Derby that he thinks doesn't have a shot.......but the horse sure looked rough in his last work.
