Moving Announcements

This is a little CBH for us, but it takes us almost a month to pick Christmas cards, and DH will be gone 3 weeks this summer (basically all of July when we're moving in August), so I'm trying to think of this now.

Are you doing/have you done them?  Did you do photo cards?  How long after moving did you send them?  How did you decide who to send them too?

My mom said we should send them to everyone on our Christmas card list, since we get cards back from 3/4 of them.  This seems fine to me, but I wasn't sure if this was the norm.

Tell me what you think of this idea for a card.  DH thinks it's cheesy (I partially agree), but we both think it's a fun and unique idea.  We love to travel and by the time we move, we will have gone on at least 3 trips this year.  So, I was thinking we'd make a card that in the center has a picture of us in front of our new house (when it's done) and all around the outside put our favorite pics from our trips (our Christmas cards usually have at least one pics from our travels on it).  I thought underneath, we could write something like, "No matter how far we roam, there's no place like our new home."  With our new address.  Is that stupid?

Re: Moving Announcements

  • I don't see anything wrong with your idea for a Christmas card. Lets be honest most people get a little cheesy when it comes to photo Christmas cards. Go for it!

We are planning a come see our new house party. I'll probably print the invite on normal printer paper, maybe something with a cute boarder from a craft store or something, and I thought I'd include a business card sized piece of paper and remind people to update their address for us.

  • Is it horrible that we don't want to throw any kind of party when we move?  DH doesn't care either way, but our group of friends are so diverse, I'd rather host a couple seperate little dinners for people to come see the house.

Like we have a few couples we get together with to play games, so we'd host a game night with them to see the house.

We have another group of friends that we all love to host dinner parties, so we'd like to invite them all over for a dinner party to see the house.

Those kind of things, instead of a formal housewarming party.  Is that a bad idea?

No, its not terrible at all. I'm kind of seeing it as a way to kill all the birds with one stone. We have a large group of friends, family and coworkers who would want to come and see the house. Instead of splitting the groups up we are going to do one big blow out open house. I figure it will be easier with our busy lives than trying to coordinate several different events for people to come over. We'll make it a big open event and if people come cool, if not cool.

  • I got these from Vistaprint. Personally, I hate photo cards with the photo pre-printed on them because I think the printing usually comes out low-quality and they end up looking a bit cheap. For our save the dates I ordered pictures from shutterfly and used rubber cement to affix them to the cards.

We moved in on the 15th and I'm still working on addressing them. This post is a nice reminder. We're doing our holiday card list, but leaving some people off if they don't have any need to know where we're living. It's mostly going to family. We don't want it to seem like we're saying "ha ha, we have a house and you still live in your crap apartment".

I wouldn't say it's stupid, but NMS and I might find it a bit "braggy".

  • That's cute but ours has a picture of our house and a picture of my kids digging in the yard and says "The ---- family has new digs" so CHEESY!  I am mailing them now so about 6 weeks after we moved.  Using my Xmas card list.

  • TBH, if I got a card in the mail with pictures of a friend's new house plus pictures of all their several vacations a year, I'd find it a little braggy.  It wouldn't even have the pretext of wishing me a merry Christmas or inviting me over, it'd just be "look at us!  look what we bought and where we can travel!"

We skipped the mailed announcements.  We just emailed people our new address, and sent our Christmas cards a little on the early side the first year so that people we exchanged cards with would have the new address from our Christmas card envelope.  The USPS forwards mail for a year anyway, so it's not like you'd miss receiving things.

These are one of the many things that it's easy to talk yourself into "needing," but you don't.

All of this. I think sending out an announcement is braggy. I would just send out Christmas cards early with a note that says you have a new address.

  • I also think the announcement looks braggy. You can make up "at-home" cards/change of address cards (use the free business cards you can get on Vistaprint) and just write something like, "We've moved." or "We have a new address!" with your names and address. Insert these into Christmas cards or other correspondance.

  • What's wrong with bragging? We waited a long time to be in a good position to buy our own home.  I am proud of how hard we worked and saved!
