NPCER: Any tips on helping child through fear of water?

Well, actually my daughter LOVES the water. She is terrified to go underwater. We've been taking her to swim since she was a baby.  The swim classes we went to were very much of the "let the kid get comfortable sort" and she never really got comfortable with going underwater. She freaks about I think mostly about water in her ears...she doesn't like the sound of it.   And she probably is just scared.

We've done swim classes, private lessons, she goes with my H....we've tried a few tricks that the swim instructor suggested. Nothing.

We'll probably just keep going regularly and wait it out until she is ready no matter how many years it takes. It's not something I need to push because we don't live near water or anything, but I would like her to learn to swim at some point just for safety reasons.   If anyone has any tips in the meantime, I'd appreciate it.  TIA

***earplugs will be a no because is generally not about having her ears messed with.  We just got to where we can go to the doctor and let them look inside without her freaking out.   Headphones are okay, but anything inside the ears? No.

  • I think it takes time.  I failed beginner lessons like 8 times, always because I refused to go off the diving board on the last day and show that I could swim to the side of the pool in deep water.  I was terrified of the diving board.  I also would never open my eyes under water and insisted on holding my nose when I went under....not really condusive to proper swim form.

still every summer they put me in lessons and I became less of a scaredy cat about the time I turned 12 and at that point actually enjoyed swimming.

  • Let me tell you what NOT to do because it was done to me!! When I was less than a year old my father used to take me to the indoor pool and say "1-2-3" and then put me under the water for like 2 seconds. I f-v-c-k-ing hated it. Want to know how I know?? Because my 33 year old self STILL remembers that sh1ts!!! Yup you read it right I have vivid memories of something that happened to me when I was like 10 months old.  As a result I was scared of indoor pools for years. I have been cussing him out about it for years. He told me he thought it would keep me from being scared of the water Hmm

    Vent over......

My oldest was like that - even in the shower, she hated water on her face.  She got over it when she was maybe 7 or 8? I tried to force it on her, and I think that's part of what took her so long.

  • Thanks for the advice. I'll be patient.

And no, I have no intention of throwing her in.  That's how my mother "learned to swim".  She is still traumatized at 57.

Yeah, don't do that.  This is how my dad taught my brothers to swim. Just threw them in the water, swim or die.  Both of them hate the water.

TO THIS DAY that negro will still say to me " But you aren't scared of the water, remember when you jumped into the pool at age one at your grandpa's Yacht Club" Confused WTF?????? No I don't remember that but I do remember you putting me under the water as a damn babyAngry
