TriGeeks: Talk to me about aquabikes

Talk to me about aquabikes. I just found out that a local tri series has one at each of their triathlons. I would secretly love to do one, and I think I found one in June that would work with my mountain bike race schedule. I can't run b/c of my very bad back, and ya'll know I don't really like to run. I love to swim and ride the bike, though.

Obviously, I'd need to buy a pair of trishorts. The swim is only 600 yards, so I'd probably swim in my sports bra  (I have one that the material is really light and dries quickly) and toss on one of my team sleeveless jerseys before the bike since I sunburn so badly. I have a lovely TT Bike w/DH's carbon wheels and a full TT set up that I never use. It might be nice to actually use it.

Have you ever done one? Fun? Worth it to try something different?

Re: TriGeeks: Talk to me about aquabikes

  • I've never done one or have really heard of them much, but I think it sounds right up your alley for something a little different to try!
  • I haven't, but I'm considering it for later this summer since I'm currently a gimpy runner.  There tend not to be many entrants in the aquabike category at tri's, because so few triathletes would choose to skip the run.  It continually surprises me how unpopular they are, because to me they sound super fun.  When I've seen aquabike races they go off with the tri people doing the same swim/bike distance, so you don't really notice the small number of people doing your event.  The only thing I wonder about being anticlimatic is crossing the finish line without many people around.

The swim to bike transition is the harder one of triathlons, but it's not too bad.  I haven't totally botched one yet, you just prepare and do it methodically.  I would probably just wear the sleeveless jersey in the water.  It'll be hard to get on when you're wet in transition, and it'll stick to you.  It shouldn't be too much drag for just 600 yds.

I would totally give it a shot, something new!

  • Pssst...are you talking about the Tri the Parks series in Georgia?

I haven't actually done it yet, but I'm registered for the aquabike on 6/23 at Indian Springs, if that's the one you are thinking of.  You should do it!!!  I'm also going to do the one in Carrollton in September.

There were 5 females that did the aquabike this past weekend at the one in Carrollton.  I think it sounds really fun (and like you, I can't/don't like to run).  I think you should go for it!

Yes, this may possibly be the one at Indian Springs IF I decide not to do a mountain bike race that weekend. I'd also probably have to get a hotel room in Jackson the night before. I'd be in the Masters Athena category. Dumb question...do they give prizes for the aquabike categories?

Alas, Carrollton falls right at the beginning of cyclocross training, so I wouldn't be able to do it.

There were 5 women in the aquabike this past weekend.  I registered as a novice female, but I'm not really sure why the categories were so important considering there are so few competitors.  There were 9 total aquabike competitors.

I have no idea if they give prizes.  I kind of hope so!  :-)

I'm going to have to get a hotel.  No way in hell am I getting up early and driving in for it.

This one and Carrollton were the only two that I am actually home for.  I am going to have to remember this for next summer.

  • DH said that he might want to do it with me (uh, we'll see, he says this a lot). I'm seriously thinking about it. I've been wanting to do something different than the same ole mountain bike races all summer.

  • I was totally psyched to finally see the aquabikes pop up in that tri series in GA.  I have known about aquabikes for several years, but there haven't been any close enough for me to actually go to.  I've been wanting to do them for a while, since I can't/don't want to run.  Finally! I just wish I wasn't travelling so much this summer so I could have done a couple more.

  • AHA!!!!  This is how it starts!!!

Yes, do it!  I've only done an aquabike at the half-IM distance (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike) when I was too injured to run.  For me, it wasn't as fun as doing the full triathlon, but that's all I could do at the time.  It's still fun.  The only issue I had with it is that we were the last heat of swimmers.  The athletes doing the whole race (swim, bike, run) were first, which makes sense, since their race will take longer.  However, those of us in the aquabike that had any speed spent most of the ride passing people.  Not a big deal, but it was sometimes a bit annoying.

    Yay!  Do it!!!

Depends on the race.  The one I did (which was tied to an Ironman 70.3) did not give prizes in the same age groups as the full tri, probably because there wasn't the volume of athletes.  I think they did something like, over 45 and under 45 for men and women.  The triathlon awards were for 5-year age groups.
