Speed work - where do you do it?

I'd like to start incorporating some speed work into my runs.  Do you do most of yours on the treadmill or do it outside?  If outside, do you do it on a track?  I'm thinking that I may start on a treadmill and maybe move it outside once the school year ends and my local track isnt taken over by practices and meets.

Re: Speed work - where do you do it?

  • I don't really have access to a track for my workouts, so I either do speed work on the treadmill or just outside on the trail/road. I have a Garmin that measures distance, so that helps.

I do it outside, but for beginners, treadmill intervals can be helpful to learn pace.  If I'm doing 400s, I'm on the track for sure.  800s I do either on the track or on the road.

I'm still very much a beginner runner. I do my speed work on my treadmill. I've only done speedwork outside once (at a track) and that I did with my friend who is a track coach running with me and pushing me (figuratively, not literally.)

  • Anything a mile or under I do on the track. All of the local HS and college tracks around here are open to the public. For my longer tempo runs, I have a few pre-marked routes or I just use my GPS watch. I don't do any on treadmills.

  • Wherever I am running that day. Sometimes I'll hop on the local HS track in the Summer, but usually I just do speed work in my neighborhood or on the treadmill.

  • treadmill, track, or just outside in the neighborhood.

I don't have a garmin so when I incorporate speed work into a normal run I do it by time, not distance.   i.e. 2 min hard, 1 min easy.

  • I will do fartleks outside on the road, hit the local high school track or I have a few set speed work outs that I do on the treadmill that kick my butt!

Of course, I have not done these in quite a while.  I can't wait to do speed work again!!

  • When I was doing speed work, I did it on the treadmill b/c I thought it was the easiest (changing my pace quickly) but I didnt feel like I really was learning how to apply it to my 'actual' running if that makes sense. So my plan post pregnancy (way later) is to start trying tempo runs for speed work, b/c I feel like this will train me to gauge that increased speed overall in my "real" running.

  • I am pretty new to running but I do all my speedwork on the TM.

This exactly. Tonight we're doing it at the local University.

  • For repeats of 400, 800, etc I stick to the treadmill during MN winter and then use the local track whenever it's not covered in snow. Tempo or goal pace runs are also good speedwork for me, and I usually do those outside (unless weather is bad).

  • treadmill & outside, both just regular running routes and on a timing track.  When I'm doing intervals on just a regular route, my Garmin is set to beep to tell me when to run and when to recover, so it takes all the guesswork out of it since I can program my workout.
