Has anyone run the Anthem Richmond Marathon?

I am considering it this year.  It will be my first marathon if i have the guts to sign up.  I am deciding between that one and my local one in Raleigh.  Virgina would be about a 3.5 hour drive so i would have to travel.  But, it looks like it has more to offer as far as spectating, snacks on the course, scenery, etc.  I was hoping to get input from anyone who has ever run it.  What are your thoughts?

Re: Has anyone run the Anthem Richmond Marathon?

  • I haven't run it, but have only heard good things from fellow running friends. I plan to do it someday, maybe 2013? It looks like a course I could PR on, and the weather in November is usually favorable for running. I don't know which one you are looking at in Raleigh, but chances are it would be hilly! Hopefully some one else will give you a more helpful response.

  • I have not ran it either but have heard good things too. It's on my list of potential future marathons.

  • this is the one that is sponsored by McDonald's and has McDonald's food on the course, correct?

I've not done it, but you've reminded me if it's existence.  It might be a good fall half for me after my summer of 10Ks.

It doesn't mention McDonald's food but it does make note of various "junk food stations" along the last quarter of the marathon portion and hot pizza at the end.

  • The Richmond half-marathon used to be sponsored by McD's.  They are sponsored by American Family Fitness this year.  I have not run the full, but I did the half last year (and will again this year).  The course is beautiful and flat.  There are a few "junk food" stations with gummi bears, pretzels, M&Ms, and beer.  Pizza at the finish.  I think last year they had McDonald's smoothies at the finish party, but no McD's food on the course. Get here early, or get a hotel downtown, because parking is a little bit nuts.  It's an awesome atmosphere; I highly recommend it.

  • I've never done the marathon itself - last year I did the 8k and this year I'm registered for the half (my first half).  It seems like a well organized race and the course is nice.  I know several people who have run it and highly recommend it!
