Sore - keep going or rest

When you're a little sore from the previous day's workout, is it better to keep going with your plans/schedule, or take a rest day? I'm talking a little sore, not bad/injured sore. What's the rationale either way?

Re: Sore - keep going or rest

  • My general rule of thumb is if I am sore from a cardio activity (first run or swim in a long while), I'll go back out the next day and do the same thing.  It almost always makes me feel better the following day.

If I'm sore from weight lifting, I will generally take it easy the next day and possibly do a light cardio workout that works the same muscles (Walk/easy swim/etc), but not push too hard.

  • If I'm really sore, I'll do a very light workout the next day. It's called Active Recovery. There is a lot of information on it out there (google it). It increases the blood flow to your muscles and helps speed recovery. I do one Active Recovery workout every week.

Don't do anything you don't already do. If you never do yoga, don't to yoga for recovery. If you run, take the dog/kids/husband/grandma on a walk around the block or for 30 minutes or so--not a walk, stroll. Play with the dog/kids. If you ride your bike, do a really easy ride that is no more than an hour. You should be going so slow that you feel like you are moving.

If I'm so sore I can't walk, I'll still usually do an active recovery bike ride. (Then again, my body is used to this...).

  • Keep going.

I always wake up sore from my evening gym work outs, and if I get my butt in the gym for a morning routine (even just a warm up like 20min on the elliptical) it warms up the muscles to kick out that left over lactic acid that's causing that soreness.. I ALWAYS feel less sore afterward. ALWAYS. And it's a huge different. usually I wobble my way to the gym and can stretch no problem after the warmup.

This!  Sometimes I may not even have a workout planned, but I know that afterwards I will feel 100% better.
