Vacation Newbie

I haven't been on vacation. Ever. My husband and I have been married for almost a year, and we'd like to go on our overdue honeymoon. I don't even know where to begin!

I'd like something that is all-inclusive, simply because as a vacationing newb, I don't want to wind up paying for a bunch of things I didn't expect. A cruise would be nice. Someplace warm? lol

We're from NYC and would like to stick to passport-free zones.

Oh, and I'd like to go scuba diving.

Our budget is around 1.5k

 Any suggestions??

Re: Vacation Newbie

  • A Bahamas cruise is usually pretty affordable.  My husband and I had a lower level room with a little window for under $1000 through RC - left from miami, one day at sea, bahamas, cococay (their private island) and key west.

But...I LOVED our honeymoon cruise.  We left out of Puertio Rico and the ports were barbados, st lucia, antigua, st croix, st maarten - 8 days 7 nights.  It was more expensive but we got a balcony room and it was worth every penny.  I think therey were more snorkling/scuba like stuff on our honeymoon cruise than the Bahamas cruise.

And alcohol is typically not included in your cruise price, neither are sodas on RC.

I have not been on one but there are cruises to Bermuda too that leave out of more northern ports.  You may be able to avoid getting a flight if you do something like that.

  • For pasport-free, Florida or Puerto Rico, but no AI resorts there that I know of, although maybe in PR...

  • There are reasonably priced cruises to Bermuda out of NYC.  You will save money by not having to fly.  There are also some out of NYC to the Caribbean.

Try Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

ETA: Sorry, you would need a passport.  How about just Florida?  There won't be an all-inclusives down there, though.  Search on Travelocity for a flight+hotel+car package.

  • As others said, you need a passport for a cruise.  It sounds like a cruise would really fit what you're looking for - do you have time to get passports?

Otherwise, I'd do Florida but it won't be all inclusive.  You might be able to find a flight/hotel package on travelocity or a similar site within your budget.

  • if those are the things you want on your vacay you'll need to get a passport.

  • If you want to go AI or on a cruise, you need a passport. It's not hard to apply and it takes about 6 weeks to get via the mail, so unless you are planning to go sooner than that, you have time to get a passport.

For a passport free zone, you could look into Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, although I am not sure if either of those places have AIs.

  • You could go to the U.S. Virgin Islands without a passport but I'm not sure you'll be able to get there for 1.5k total.

I'd look at getting a passport.

You should go to expedia or another travel website and look at hotel + flight + car options.  It's not too hard to figure out all the costs of a trip.  You need somewhere to stay, to eat, and to get around.  You'll also want to budget for activities and tips.  Usually the only unexpected fees would be at the hotel so watch for that when looking at hotels (parking, internet, etc)
