Has anyone been to Roatan?

H and I decided on Roatan for our 'anniversary' trip in September (our anniversary is actually in November, but that's the rainiest month there, so we've decided to go a little earlier and then just to a weekend getaway for our actual anniversary).

We're really excited because I've heard the diving there is excellent, and since we weren't able to dive on our last two vacations (H had a dislocated shoulder for our HM, and then our Kauai trip got rained out), we're looking to make up for it here.

Although we want to do a lot of diving, I want to do a lot of relaxing and maybe a few other land activities there too.  So my question is, has anyone been to Roatan?  Any recommendations for restaurants, activities, etc?  We'll be on the West End.

  • I went to Roatan a few years ago on a service trip, so probably not as relaxing as your trip, but we got to do some fun things.

I would suggest going to gumbalimba park.  They have a bunch of animals there, like iguanas and parrots and monkeys, and they also have a pirate museum, with some interesting history of the island.   http://www.gumbalimbapark.com/index.html

I don't scuba, but we went snorkling and it was really great.  It's supposed to be one of the best places to dive in the world and I would believe it.  There are a couple of shipwrecks around the island that you can dive at.

It's a beautiful place and the locals are really friendly.  Have fun!

  • At first I thought you said "driving", and I was all fired up to say "it's not a safe place to drive".  The roads aren't great, and the drivers are terrible.  There are frequent fatal accidents.  It's one place I would suggest you not rent a moped, though you will see them everywhere for rent.

The reef is amazing.  It is beautiful.  You're really going for the nature, more than anything.  There isn't much to do outside of a few nature attractions, and what your hotel/resort offers.

I would compare the reef and water comparable to much of that in Hawaii.  (Reminds me of Hanauma Bay off of Oahu.)  Worth the trip, if diving is your main goal.

  • Yes, it was one of the ports on our cruise. We LOVED it! The beaches and water are gorgeous, the people are super friendly, and it's awesome for snorkeling and diving. We snorkeled right off a pier, the reef is huge and just amazing, best snorkeling we've ever experienced!

We went to the Maya Key, a short boat ride away from port. Other than the excellent snorkeling, there's a wild animal exhibit and other interesting things to check out there. The local food they served at the poolside restaurant was delicious (and cheap!):  www.mayakeyroatan.com

    Have fun!

We were there last year for a cruise as well and did the zipline with Pirates of the Caribbean.  We really enjoyed it, but I'd LOVE to be on YOUR vacation!  I'm dreaming of the day that we can go back and snorkel and dive there.

  • We stopped there on a cruise, so not the same experience at all that you're going to have. We went snorkeling with a place called Upachaya that came highly recommended on Trip Advisor. We just went for the day, but they had an eco-lodge there with wellness retreat type things if that's something you're in to. The snorkeling with them was excellent, though. Small groups, no one else around, etc.
