Torn disc in back....anyone?
Diagnosed with a torn disc at L5S1, one round of injections. Althought I am SUPER antsy to get back out for a good jog I know I must let my body heal. Has anyone else been through this? What was your recovery time like?

Re: Torn disc in back....anyone?
I have to admit that I've never heard anyone speak of a "torn" disc. Herniated, ruptured or bulging maybe?? And, the injections you speak of...would that be cortisone? If so, just keep in mind that you are managing the pain...you are not fixing anything, Spine issues are a real pita.
Regardless, I have/had several herniated discs within my c-spine - very bad case of degenerative disc disease.Three discs ruptured a couple of years ago and I had a disectomy & fusion (discs were removed, replaced w/ cadaver bone and then the discs were all fused together).
Sadly, for many with such a surgery, you end up needing another and that's where I'm headed as the discs above my fusion are close to rupturing. Anyway, IF you discs are severly herniated, I'd only say be very, very careful...as, rupturing will cause you to likely end up in the operating room and cause you a ton of pain. My mother underwent a fusion on her lumbar spine....not fun. If there's a slight herniation, I would say do what you can to rest it...as long as you can but it may not be a bad idea to speak with someone at a spine center to get their thoughts. In terms of recovery after surgery, 8-12 weeks. GL!
I've had a herniation at L5-S1 and L4-L5. I was able to rehab with injections, acupuncture, and PT, but ultimately I re-injured my back lifting my LO.
The second time, I had a discectomy (but no fusion, like PP). It's entirely likely that I'll have another one some day. The best advice I can give you is to take some time to heal it now and strengthen your core. If it were me, I would never run again-- the motion is just too jarring and repetitive.
I'm very careful with my back and I'm trying to strengthen my core more. FWIW I run 4 days/week, I've run marathons, etc. My back issues definitely haven't prevented me from being active. I'm careful with weight lifting and core exercises, because I'm worried I'll injure myself if I move the wrong way.
You really just need to listen to your body and give it time to heal. If you're antsy to get moving, you could try swimming (but talk to your doctor about that first).
