Shin splints - help please

They hurt :(  I just finished week 6 day 2 of C25K. I was fitted for running shoes in Feburary and I'm taking it slow. So where do I go from here? I'm icing now. How much time do I take off and when can I get started again? I told a friend I'd do a 5k with her on the 26th (it would be our first) and I really don't want to have to skip it.

Re: Shin splints - help please

  • Massage does wonders! Even if you just do some self-massage while watching tv. Doesn't have to be lots of pressure.

Also stretching your calf muscles helps, do it 2-3 times a day.

    Feel better!

  • I had a PT tell me to rub them as much as possible--even if it hurts. It increases blood flow to the area and promotes healing.

  • I am new to this, but I just googled it because I get a lot of shin splints and am trying to prevent them.  Anyway, everything said to stretch a ton, ice them, and try not to heel strike when you run.  I am sure there are runners on here who have been doing this a lot longer who probably have better advice though.  ;)

If you don't have a foam roller, you should probably get one soon if you are planning to continue running.

  • Thanks y'all! I do have a foam roller. It is a wonderful thing lol I'm icing and resting and going to try back in a few days I guess! I'm also going to a new PCP next week so I think I'll mention it to her. Thanks for the advice!
