S/O handbags -- Dooney & Burke

Everyone below was saying Coach was the IT bag at their high school. At mine it was Dooney. Those damn ducks were every where you looked. I didn't have one...wasn't worth my Chuck E. Cheese paychecks, lol. Was this a thing at anyone else's school? Particularly the leather ones with the drawstring top, usually like navy or green with tan piping.. ::shudders::

funny thing is, I've actually seen some lately that caught my eye, but I still harbor an aversion.

  • Well, I am old because the "it" bag when I was in high school was a Liz Clairbourne bag.
  • Yes!! I remember those bags, and you were extra cool if you had a D&B bag, but we are talking about 89-92!!! (did I just age myself!!!)

    I remember those, too!

  • Yup, D&B was the thing at my high school too, although I never had one. I think that was before Coach was as popular as it is now.

Oh, yes! We did have those. I do recall owning a little crossbody one at some point. And...omg, I'm just remembering another purse trend my school went through -- shoe purses! For real. Maybe around 7th grade or '89/'90?

When I was in HS the bag to have was the crochet/knit cross body bag (I had two from The Limited, The Sak was also popular).  Does anyone remember those? Some people had the small embroidered cross body bags that you found at the hippie stores too.

Coach and KS were the bags to have once I got to college.

  • Yep, Dooney was the It bag when I was in high school too.  I'm pretty sure they were all fakes.  If any were real I'd be very surprised.

My favorite bag in high school was a brown leather Fossil tote.

  • D&B was also really popular in my high school as well. I just about lost my damn mind when my grandparents gifted me one for my birthday before..sophomore year I think?

Oh my gosh, I loved that thing...I only very recently put it in the Goodwill donation pile. I hadn't used it for years but I had a hard time letting go of it! Hah

This wasn't a thing at my school.  Most girls didn't have handbags but the ones that did certainly didn't have designer ones.  I grew up in a LCOL area.

Oh yes, I remember Dooney Fever in the late 80s. I admit it gave me an aversion to the D&B name as well, but I recently (maybe 3 years ago) bought TWO very large D&B leather totes and LOVE them. Very classic styling and fantastic quality.

  • Man, I am old! I was in high school (and college) during grunge, so the it bag was a no-name backpack. Function over fashion!

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • Mine were Esprit cause I'm old!

  • When they first came out my dad went to the store and bought 3. One for me, one for my sister and one for my mom.

I used it for about a year then sold it on eBay.

  • It was after high school for me, but both Coach and Dooney were in at one time.

I have one of each from that long ago...neither is a trendy style or has obvious logos on them so you'd have to get pretty up close to know the brand, and they've held up beautifully.

I'm with you...the ducks do make me shudder.  I won't buy any bag with logos all over it!

ETA, I'm with the poster who said Liz Claiborne bags were "it" when she was in hs.  That's what we all carried!  Those, and the ridiculous "petal" bags...no name leather things with a drawstring and four petals around the opening that we all bought for $20 at the flea market.  :-)  Now I feel old...

  • When DS was in middle school; the change over occurred here. In 7th, they all had the little D&B shoulder bag with the tan trim. (I had the bigger one at the time. Great, well made bag, btw, but it didn't hold much) I mean all; like they'd been distributed on entry to the building. In 8th, they all had the same little Coach bag. I always wondered if there was some mass email that went out. A number of them were spending their babysitting money on the Return to Tiffany collection as well.
