SF off the beaten path?

We're headed up to SF for our 7th anniversary at the end of the month. We've been there half a dozen weekends and end up doing the same types things (Ferry Marketplace/Slanted Door/Bourbon and Branch/North Beach). This time we are going to a Giants game, which should be fun. We're also trying Mission Chinese Food at the recommendation of a friend. What are your favorite locals spots for food or entertainment? Thanks!

Re: SF off the beaten path?

  • Try to get a table at Frances or Flour + Water - check on Opentable to see if they have any openings.  Both are really good and in the Mission / Castro area.

You could try the Lyon Street Steps for a workout, or you could walk along the coast and find the wave organ and listen to it "play" - best to go at high tide.  Golden Gate Park can be nice to wander through if the weather is good.  There's a new bar just opened by the Bourbon and Branch people called "Local Edition" - off Market so central to downtown.  Also, I really like Rye, which is a very chill / nondescript bar at the corner of Geary and Leavenworth (saw Ashton Kutcher there last week when I went).  If you want to catch a show, Beach Blanket Babylon is a city tradition.

You could also wander the Mission District and go on a mural walk - they're everywhere, so bring a camera and get some great pictures.  An afternoon in Dolores Park is hard to top if the weather is nice - great people watching.  If you go to Dolores Park and you're *not* be a fan of recreational drug use, make sure you pass on the truffles.  Get Bi-Rite Ice Cream instead (salted caramel is the one you'd want to try there).

If you like museums, the de Young is my favorite and the MOMA is great as well.  You could also walk through the city to try to find the wild parrots.

As silly as it sounds, my husband has done both the Segway tours and the GoCar tours in San Francisco and he has come back raving about both of them.  This thoroughly surprised me as I didn't think he'd enjoy either one.  So if you want to do something touristy but different and you haven't done either of those - maybe consider it?

Hope that helps - enjoy!  Hope the nice weather we are having now holds for your visit.  :)

    Vacation
  • In addition to the above, I'd add to pick another neighborhood - Castro, Haight, Richmond, Sunset, Bernal Heights, Noe Valley, etc, and just go explore. Check out the food trucks at Fort Mason Friday nights. Watch the sunset at Land's End, go hike around the Marin Headlands or Mt. Tam. Take the ferry to Sausalito or Tiburon or get a car and drive down to Half Moon Bay (about 40 minutes and a gorgeous drive).

We recently did a sourdough bread making class and had a blast (and now I'm baking sourdough every week).

  • my 2 favorite sushi places are Sushi Rapture on Washington and Leavenworth (Nob Hill-ish) and Noriega Teriyaki on Noriega and 25th in Outer Sunset.
  • Have you been to Burma Superstar (http://www.burmasuperstar.com/)? I finally went on my last trip and really liked it (admittedly I haven't had other Burmese food to compare it to).

I literally JUST put up a post about the food truck event PP mentioned called Off the Grid, which was also really fun, especially if it's a nice day: http://bit.ly/J5q5on

If you're in the Mission, Beretta (http://berettasf.com/) is a good restaurant/bar (I've only had drinks and dessert), and Pizzeria Delfina (http://pizzeriadelfina.com/) always gets good press. Have fun!
