Experiences with Atopica?

Our dog has had severe skin issues over the past year.  It was very bad last summer, and we went through numerous cycles of prednisone/antibiotics, and then eventually just used an antihistamine, and then slowly she got better during the winter/early spring (likely because of less pollen, etc) and didn't have to be on anything.  Now she is starting to itch again and we will have to visit the vet again.

I was doing some searching online and came across information on Atopica.  I had never heard of this before and neither vet (we have gone to two over this issue) has suggested it.  Maybe because it's very pricey?  But we have spent a lot in office visits, tests, medicine, etc, so that would be kind of surprising they wouldn't at least suggest it.

Has anyone used it for your dog?  What is your experience with it?  Have you used the generic version?  Were you having to give it everyday or could you reduce to every other day or less?  Are you using it for the long term?  Any help would be appreciated!

Re: Experiences with Atopica?

  • We use it for our yellow lab. She doesn't need it during the winter months, but usually in April she starts getting licky/itchy and we start her up on it again. It does help, but the downside is how expensive it is.

What kind of dog do you have? How much does she weigh? Our dog is 70 lbs, so she needs the 150mg dosage. 15 doses of 150mg cost us $135. You're supposed to front-load them with a dose a day when they first get started, then based on how they're doing, you can back off. We give our dog a dose every other day, so during the warmer months, we pay $135 per month to have her on Atopica.

I did look into the generic, but we get a discount on meds through our vet for the wellness plan we have her on, so the Atopica actually ended up being a little cheaper.

  • Our dog would fall into the weight class below yours, she is 57-58 pounds, so I believe she would need the 100 mg dose.  But still, probably looking at at least $100/month.
  • I work at a vets office and it works quite well.  I think the doctors don't immediately jump to that treatment b/c it is expensive.  I think they want to try other less expensive, and hopefully shorter term options, before jumping to the big guns per say.  We tried the generic and several clients reported it didn't work as well so we stopped carrying the generic.  The manufacturer often has coupons that we pass along to clients.
