Maxi-dress to graduation?

My SIL is graduating from college in a few weeks.  It's going to be outside and her BF who is also graduating with her wants to have lunch at a local diner afterward (that's a whole other story).  Would a maxi-dress with a short-sleeved cardigan over it and a pair of flat sandals be dressy enough?  Specifically, I am looking at this one from Target or I have one with tiers in green and brown from NY and CO a few years back.  If not, I do have some more formal dresses I can wear but I want to be comfy!

Re: Maxi-dress to graduation?

  • College graduations aren't too dressy. I would dress more for where you're going afterwards rather than the actual event.

Completely appropriate!  When I graduated a few years ago, there was even guests wearing jeans/shorts, etc.

If I was doing that, I'd just wear sweats, lol.  Seriously, this diner has the worst food ever but her BF is obsessed so that's where we're going.  I got food poisoning one time from there so I'm not really a fan.

  • I have this, I wear it with sandals and a denim jacket when it's cold. Love it, completely appropriate.

  • Thanks!  I'll check it out this weekend.  Hopefully I'll get a lot of wear out of it this summer too.
  • I would take a jacket because sometimes the buildings are really cold especially if it's e fist graduation.

  • I attended a graduation yesterday and saw tons of maxis there. The dress you picked looks like it'll be perfect.

  • That dress is adorable and totally appropriate for the event.
