More adoption questions

Our landlord has given us the okay to add another dog to our home!!!! We have a couple of dogs we are interested in. I really want to make sure we are a good fit for whatever dog we bring into our home, as we believe once and animal has entered our home it is with us forever no matter what. Should we fill out the adoption app and then once we are approved contact the foster parent with questions or is it okay to contact them before filling out an app? When contacting the foster what should I ask? I know we will request our ACD Tyson to meet with the dog before hand but other then that I don't know. SHould we tell the foster parent a bit about ourselves and our current pets?

Tyson was given to us from a family that could not longer keep him and our two cats came from my SIL who used to breed British Shorthairs so going through the adoption process is new to us.

Thanks!!

Re: More adoption questions

  • When we adopted Pepper, I filled out an app, further explained our living situation (I felt like the app was too vague) & asked a ton of questions. We had no problem getting approved. Maybe it was because I was so thorough, lol.

  • I make sure you go to the shelter at a time when both your vet and landlord is available for them to call (Or have hard copies of your dog's current vaccinations with you, and possibly a letter from your landlord giving you the OK to have another animal)

I say this because when I went to my shelter for Sammy, they couldn't get in touch with my landlord (forget the fact that he was a.) very sick and emaciated in the shelter b.) I already had two guinea pigs. c.) he is a guinea pig, people!!!) so I had to leave empty handed and come back the following day. With Eastwood, I didn't have Jack's vaccination records (my mom had them somewhere, and I couldn't reach her, and the vet was closed when the shelter tried to call. T_T)

BUT at my other area shelter, when I adopted the guinea pig before Sammy, all they wanted was my 5 dollars and put Max in a box and gave him to me. LOL. It's better to be overprepared than under, IMO.

I'm not sure about your shelter, but I know at mine when you are adopting a dog, and have a current dog, you are allowed to take both out for a walk (they have tons of green space outside, like walking trails and the like.) Just so they can get used to each other on neutral territory. I'd imagine that's kind of a common thing though.

    Good Luck!
