Any suggestions on getting dog to use ramp?
So we bought our 10 y.o. lab a ramp to get into the back of the car. She's got arthritis and over the past 6 months, we've noticed it's taking her a little more effort to jump in. She can still do it though, and yesterday, when we set up the ramp, she went right around it and jumped into the car! I think we offended her.
But I know she's about ready for it, it's just a matter of getting her used to it. Any suggestions?
Re: Any suggestions on getting dog to use ramp?
This describes Dexter to a T. He has arthritis too, and when he started having some trouble jumping up onto our bed, we put a low bench at the foot of the bed that he could use as a step. But instead, he started going to the side of the bed and jumping up from there. lol. We used bite-size pieces of chicken to lure him up onto the bed, and blocked his access from the sides, so that he had to use the bench. He got it in time.
For your situation, maybe have one of you in the back seat holding the treat where she can see it, and the other outside physically guiding her where you want her to go, and encouraging her as soon as she puts her paws on the ramp. If you do a few sessions, a few times per session, I bet she'll get the hang of it.
