Do you feel fat when shopping?

Lurker rant here.  I'm not overweight and I do work out but I don't have a really toned, perfect body.  I have always loved shopping except in the last year or two as my body has changed a bit, I am starting to feel a little depressed and unattractive after a day shopping. I definitely have cut back on clothing purchases because of this. The dressing room mirrors really seem to accentuate every flaw on my body. I was wondering if others on here felt like this when shopping.  I am scared to go swimsuit shopping and thinking of just ordering online b/c of this.

Re: Do you feel fat when shopping?

  • I'm sorry you feel that way. Do you have a Nordstrom near you? They have shopping assistants available to help you buy purchases to help feel your best.

Also, try focusing on fun accessories to help jazz up any outfit.

  • Yes, I love Nordstrom and do have one near me.  I thought about a personal shopper, but I don't really think that's the issue that I need help finding the right pieces for my body. When I am covered up I look okay.  As I mentioned, I'm not overweight.  There is just something about the mirrors there that makes me cringe while I am changing and makes me want to online shop.

  • I sympathize with the fitting room lighting...it can be just awful. I always spray tan if I'm going bathing suit shopping. It helps a bit.  Try to remember that the lighting is awful and that's not what your body looks like in normal light.
  • It doesn't matter if you aren't overweight. They are really helpful. I'm not overweight either and the personal shoppers have helped me find some awesome stuff.

I agree about the lights in the changing room.

Also, online shopping is fine. Use ebates, look for coupon codes, and read reviews left by others. Some people only online shop because of convenience.

  • yes! I've lost some weight & the feeling is still hard to shake. Just learn what works well for your body shape....like I look amazing in wrap dresses, but I will never be able to pull of straight fitted ones. it is what it is. I look great in bootcut anything, but not skinny jeans
  • I am thin and in pretty good shape but I definitely can feel a little like poo after shopping!  Dressing room lighting is usually SO terrible and accentuates every little flaw. Also, if you happen to try on something that is too small, it can make you feel worse. Squeezing into something too small is never self esteem boosting! I totally understand!

No. Fat is not an emotion.

  • The only place I feel fat is the Gap.  Their clothes fit me like crap, and I always end up leaving in tears.

It's just the lighting in some places. I find that some places have lighting that shines directly down on you. This creates all sorts of shadows that look like you have lumps and bumps everywhere, and most of it is just shadows from other places in your body (trust me I've analyzed this to death).  I feel the same way in some places and I'm underweight.

If you find yourself feeling like this in certain stores, why don't you buy things and then take them home to try on in the comfort of your own home and then return what you don't like?
