Bike trainer recs

I'm (finally) getting a bike trainer. I figure it is going to be the easiest way to get in a decent cardio workout for now while my son is attached to me constantly. What are your recommendations? I'll probably be using it more than riding outside for the next couple months.

Re: Bike trainer recs

  • We have a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine.  I got an open box special on it last winter, and have been really happy with it.
  • Go read my bio. Tons of trainer advice. I like my Kurt Kinetic.
  • we have a mag cycleops and it's decent, but I really wish we had a nicer one like Sadle & Susie
  • Ok. I'm leaning toward the Kurt kinetic road machine. It will be on carpet, so it sounds like I won't need the mat. I'm hoping my lbs sells it because I don't know what else I need to get for it. Amazon has a whole bunch of accessories.

You don't really need a ton of accessories. The only thing I have is a block to raise the front wheel with. Technically, you can use thick books or a phone book, but I find that the front wheel moves around if I do that. I prefer a block; it's worth the $25. If you have carpet, you don't need a mat. Buy a cheap, really large beach towel to put under the trainer. I got mine for about $4 at Walm*rt. If you don't put something under it, you could get grease or grime on the carpet.

You will also need an old tire. Trainers wear out tires and will kill any good tire. Either buy a special "Trainer" tire or just use one of your old tires you were going to throw out. I recommend the latter b/c I'm cheap.
