Those of you who have traveled abroad with a child?
Hello!
I have lived, worked and traveled all over the world. I've lived in London, Spain, and Panama and have a lot of experience with traveling within foreign countries.
The thing I don't have experience with is traveling with a child. My DD is a year old right now. DH and I want to start planning more trips and plan to leave DD with the grandparents for two trips this year.
When did those who you who travel with your kids start bringing them along? Did you bring family members or a nanny along with you as well? What age do you think is the easiest to start?
Just curious! Thanks!
Re: Those of you who have traveled abroad with a child?
We first flew with our son at 6 months, internationally. He's flown domestically since he was 3 months. It was definitely easier when he wasn't walking or eating solid foods.
but it's been fun. We live in India and have traveled back to my home state of Hawaii 3 times since he was born. He's also been to London, Amsterdam and Japan. I think as long as you're prepared to go with the flow, keep LO entertained and pack extra food, clothes and diapers, you should be good!
Where are you planning on traveling to?
a girl from Hawaii, living the expat experience in India.
We took our 11 month old daughter to Spain with us to visit my family. It was DH, me, and the baby that flew together, but then we stayed with my parents so we had them to help us the whole trip.
I was planning a trip to Paris this summer for just me and my 3 year old daughter, and we were going to meet up with my Mom, but then I got pregnant, so that trip is postponed at least a year now.
My daughter is a VERY easy kid, always has been. So take that into account!
We started traveling overseas with our son when he was 8 weeks old, he was born in London so we had to travel to see my family. It was so easy between that age and like 10 months, then it gets more difficult until about 3, then it is easier again, at least for us. We totally go with the flow, we don't stress about naps or letting them sleep on the go and in turn we have really easy going travelers.
Edit: We have never traveled overseas with help, it has always been the two of us and the kids.
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. We've flown domestically with DD 6 times since she was born. We have a 12 day trip to Sweden/Denmark and Norway planned for this Fall. I'm debating taking her, but I think my parents would come too. So that would make it easier.
We just want to get out there again and really miss the excitement of being in other countries/cultures, etc. She's going to be one well-traveled kid, as our jobs also take us around the world.
I guess the best advice is to just go with the flow and not plan too much if we take her with us. Plan to be in places for longer periods of time, etc. I really appreciate the advice, everyone!
We took our son on his first trip to the Bahamas when he was 14 mo's old. He is now 5 and we have taken him to the Bahamas a few times since, Italy for 16 days, and a few other places in the US. Obviously the Italy trip was long and very far so I was worried about how it would go. For Italy my mom came, but she is older and really was not able to help much with him. I did not bring her to help though...the trip was a surprise for her.
As far as travelling with a little one - it takes more planning but it was still enjoyable. We had a great trip. My son was almost 3 when we went to Italy and he still talks about it.
We are looking at taking him to Hawaii next. The last time I was there I got pregnant with him!
