what's wrong with my leg??

halp me.

i started working out (again) a few weeks ago.  i have been exercising since the fall and before that, i didn't exercise my entire pregnancy (but i was a regular exerciser before my pg, if that matters).

i have no pain when i am working with my trainer - we do a lot of serious stuff..jumping drills, short sprints, weights, body weight exercises.  etc.  we aren't f*cking around.

now, i have to do cardio a few times a week in addition to those workouts and that is when i experience the WORST pain in my right leg.  it is the lower leg, on the outside of my leg.  muscle pain, i believe.

i generllly run or do hill climbing and i have the worst pain, to the point where the first 30 minutes of my workout i have to go really slow and not nearly as intense i would like (or as i used to do when i used to workout regularly).  it is really bad when i walk.  the second half of my workout is a little better, but still lots of pain.  i have been pushing through each workout but i feel like it is NOT getting better.

i have the option (obv) of not working out but i feel like, what's the point?  as soon as i go back to exercising, i would experience this same thing.

i also have this pain when i walk many blocks to work.  i am practically limping by the time i get there.

wtf is going on?  i just want it to feel better again.  and i have no idea what's going on.  i know if i go to my doc, she will just tell me to work through it.  i asked my trainer but she doesn't have any idea what it going on either.

anyone?

ETA:  it is only in my right leg.

Re: what's wrong with my leg??

  • Can you try something extremely low impact like the elliptical?

Maybe you should see a physical therapist.

  • Maybe shin splints? Are you wearing older shoes?

  • I don't know. My only thought is that there is something wrong with your foot, that is causing pain in your leg. Are your shoes good?

  • If the pain is that intense, I also really recommend seeing a physical therapist. I wouldn't continue with that kind of pain until you've seen someone about it. You don't want to keep working and make the problem worse.

i have had shin spints before and this is def not it.  and i did buy new shoes last weekend thinking that maybe my older sneaks were part of the problem.  but no.  it's still an issue.

and babs -- i think my next strategy is to move to the eliptical.  sigh.  i much prefer speed walking hill intervals on the treadmill (man it makes me sweat and burns a sh!tton of calories, even though i'm not running), but it's really really hurting.

  • also, this ma be relevant:

this is the same pain i used to experience when i would walk long distances in kitten heels (remember when kitten heels were cool?  lolol).  anyway, the fact that this is happening all the time, even in my gym sneaks, even if i walk 1 block, is making me wig.

  • anti-inflammatories are my best friend. you can use over the counter stuff but I like the hard stuff my doc prescribes

    rest (sorry)

    ice twice a day

massage (not the fun kind, the physical therapy kind)

  • oh no, you know what that sounds like? Leg gonorrhea.  The only treatment is to amputate.

    Sorry!

Go to the doctor! This is not the time to play Nest Doctor.
  • Is it on the outside of your shin? I have compartment syndrome (had the surgeries in both legs), and what you are describing sounds a lot like it.

  • Wait, did this just start after you started using your new shoes?  Maybe try a different pair.
  • Try a foam roller....It's painful, but in a good way. Also, check with a doc just in case-Or try talking to trainer too. They might know what you tweaked and how to fix it or at least not hurt it more.

  • Shin splints.

Face a wall.  Make your right foot as close to a 90 degree angle as possible and tap the wall as fast as you can.

Do this on and off for a minute for at least 5 minutes before the cardio.

  • Where exactly is the pain? Does your leg muscle get really hard and inflexible?
