Questions about becoming Pharmacy Tech

Hi - I am new to the nest and was curious if anyone has advice or information about becoming a pharmacy tech? I have researched the school to become one and had seen previously in many articles that this is one field that is booming and in need of employees.

I would like to know if what I'm reading is accurate (taking into consideration parts of the country and cost of living of course) ...is it reasonable to think once certified, a pharmacy tech could make $40-$50k?

Thanks for any advice or information any of you can offer.

Re: Questions about becoming Pharmacy Tech

  • I can't help you with the pay scale for a pharmacy  tech but I know from where I live they are in demand.   My dad went through a two year program and had a full time job when graduated he hasn't even taken his test yet and got a job.  The area we live in Northeast Ohio is struggling for people to find jobs myself included unemployed teacher but pharmacy techs find jobs really easy.  Good luck.
  • The pay scale is going to be different for each state I think. In my area the average salary is 34K.

  • Unfortunately, unless you're in a HCOL area, you're unlikely to make that much starting out.  Where I live (which is a very LCOL area) certified techs start out at around 25k/year.  Most places pay their Senior Certified Techs better, but that title usually requires some on the job experience first.

That said, the job market for techs is pretty good, especially if you have the certification.  (Around here at least, every area will be a bit different).

One piece of advice I have is to be very careful about selecting your program.  In the US, there isn't any education requirements to being certified, you just have to pass the exam.  You want a program that is focused on teaching you the content you'll need to know for the exam, and what to expect in the work environment.  You should avoid the programs that are focused solely on handing out as many of the school's generic "degrees" as possible.

  • Hi Im a long time luker but a former pharm tech so I thought Id add my 2cents. I would first look into getting hired somewhere such as CVS/Walgreens/Rite-Aid etc as they will train you and get you state certified while paying you. They wont pay as well as a hospital but you wont be in tons of debt either.

When I worked at the pharmacy we generally found that people who went through the programs were just as clueless about everything as the people just off the street. Each place you work will have their own computer system and way of doing things that a school cant really prepare you for.

Overall it was a pretty decent job. though if you work at a retail pharmacy its still retail and you still have to deal with the public and all the crap of working in retail.

Also, as for the pay, I live in a relatively HCOL area (MA) and I still made just over minimum wage even after being there for 2+ years. So its not that great but I think hospitals do pay better.

    Hope that helps!

  • It is a booming field and as a pharmacy tech, you can make up to $15.55 per hour. In addition to pharmacy technician training, you should also look to get a PTCB certification to boost your marketability. Flexible and affordable online training in the field is available at Career Step. You may want to visit their website for more details.
