I'll be in New Jersey for a conference next week and planned my travel around spending the "weekend" in New York City. I have a friend who lives just outside the city, who I plan on staying with but she has plans all day on Saturday.
Realistically, I won't get to her house until Friday night and we will leave on Sunday, so Saturday will be my only real day to explore. I haven't been to NYC before, so I am totally overwhelmed with what to do or where to go to get the most "bang" for my short stay, especially since I'll be alone.
Any tips? My first thought was just to head towards Times Square and start exploring. I love farmers markets and unique shops, so I'd love to find that kind of thing, but would love any advice.
TIA!
Re: Going Solo in NYC for a Day
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

One of the NYC girls on F&B blogged about Highline recently http://www.thebaloneybug.tumblr.com/day/2012/04/30; she had great blurbs about NYC, you may want to look at;
Having been to NYC twice, I think TS is worth a peak if you're there, but I would just walk through the area a bit on your way to Central Park or something.

To me, Times Square is hell on earth. It is worth seeing if you have extra time I guess, but I definitely wouldn't plan on hanging out there, and there is nothing unique in that area.
I'd wander around the Meatpacking District/West Village/Union Square/Greenwich Village/Soho. They're adjacent to each other. In the Meatpacking District you can go to the High Line and Chelsea Market; in the West Village there are lots of pretty old townhouses on quaint streets and there is lots of shopping along Bleecker Street; in the Union Square area you could go to the Greenmarket; Greenwich Village is cool to see generally; and Soho has unique boutiques (on streets other than Broadway).
If it's your first time, do you want to see toursity stuff? If so, then do a Greyline/double decker hop on/off tour.
If you really don't want to deal with that, I'd wander around the Village at least part of the day.
I was just going to suggest J's blog. I plan on checking out Highline the next time I'm in NYC for a long weekend.
I was there for the day this past weekend, and I have to agree with PPs, Times Square is hell on earth. Unless you are going to a show in the area - avoid it. When we were there, we went to a great farmer's market in Union Square. Everything looked delicious. There's good shopping in SoHo. You can check out the 9/11 memorial at ground zero.
i live in NJ, right near NYC and agree with everybody else. i would see times square, but not really make it your main thing. maybe just walk through there to see it.
the highline is very cool with some neat scenery. you can also check out chelsea market while you're in that area ( all kinds of unique food places- they have a place that sells all different flavored balsalmic vinegars and salts).
dh and i also just went and walked across the broolyn bridge, which was neat. get some pizza at either grimaldis or ignazios before or after :-)
somebody else mentioned union square farmer's market- very cool if its going on while you're there.
Ditto on TS - ugh
highline is amazing and so great to walk
i loooooooove soho/chelsea/tribeca - some of my favorite spots
lots of random shops and parks and great eats
enjoy it is the best city in the world
