My dyeing class, for those who asked

Rock, I went to Black Sheep Knitting in Needham. I didn't know they have a full basement down there, so it was the perfect setup.

We learned to do the "painting" method, I guess? Pretty much mix dyes and pour onto the yarn, diluting if we wanted softer color, etc. I put WAY too much dye on one of my skeins, so it looks totally different from how I imagined it. But my other skein looks like a rainbow of deep colors. I now know that less is more.

There were a couple of random skeins left at the end, so I jumped in and tossed a bunch of leftover dye from the table onto it. Turned out to be my best one yet. The teacher said she'd steam it overnight and have it to pick up this afternoon :)

The woman on one side of me is now dyeing yarn to sell, so she was pretty much an expert at the glazing technique. This technique was new for her.

It was a lot of fun seeing all the different color combos that showed up.

And bonus, I found a website last night with all the dyeing supplies if I want to play again :)

Re: My dyeing class, for those who asked

  • I love dying textiles. :) I use to do tons of it for the wearable art shows. Man I need to go over to my mom's house a get my dyes out.  I'm jealous! I miss doing things as a group like in design school.

That was my favorite yarn shop discovery from the yarn crawl.  I wish it were closer to me, but I'll have to make my way back there at some point.  Trying to put a dent in my existing stash first though.

    Glad you enjoyed the class!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
