Which is worse?

Signing up for a 5k and not running the entire thing (walking some because you aren't ready for an entire 5k)

or

Not signing up for the 5k because you will have to walk and listen to your friends and family cheer you on as you are walking and thus feel like a dingdong.

  • I don't like getting noticed so I would pick option 1.

  • I've done number 1 and it's fine - a lot of people don't run 5Ks entirely.

Also, there will invariably be stretches along the route without spectators. So you can sneak in the walks when they arent looking. Wink

Also plus, if you haven't raced before, you might be surprised at the difference adrenaline can make. You could be surprised at your performance.

Always be yourself. Unless you suck.

I ran one 5k about two years ago.  The race is downtown and so basically a giant road race.  I change my mind at least every 5 minutes.  GAH!

if it makes you feel any better, i am signed up to do a 5k next weekend with my dad and i fully plan on walking the entire thing.  i hate running and am just going to support the cause.

right but your family can't be everywhere at once!

besides. plenty of people walk 5Ks. How much can you run now?

    You should do it.

I'd probably sign up but not make it a big deal with friends and family. Walking is fine. Being cheered to walk would make me feel silly (except by my kid and husband.  She'd basically be cheering because she could see me, not for running).

This is going to be good.

This response is both random and bizarre.

  • Not signing up. As long as you put yourself near the back of the corral so you don't piss off the runners, walking is just fine in a 5K.

Look, when I first started doing road races, I was one of the slowest people on the route. I would comfort myself by saying that I was ahead of the people who didn't participate that morning.

But gradually, I got better. I'll never be a speed demon, but I am a solid middle of the packer and I once finished 3rd in my age division. (Granted, there were only 6 of us in my age division, but still. I got a certificate, dammit!)

    You should do it.
