WWYD-Found lotto ticket worth $1 million

So on the news today there was a story about a woman who found a scratch lotto ticket in the trash that was actually worth $1 million! She cashed it in and now has been sued by the woman who purchased it who is claiming it is hers as she bought it. The woman who found it says it was "discarded property" and since it was in the trash the woman has no claim to it.

So would you turn it in and claim the money for yourself, finders keepers? Or would you try to find the person who purchased the ticket?

  • Honstly I may look around and wait a few days, but I think once its in the trash it's fair game.

Its like garage sales when someone finds something of value that is being sold for pennies, knowledge is power:)

  • Ditto. Once it is in the trash, it is fair game.

I am wondering how/why this woman now claims it is hers??? Winning money brings the crazies out for sure.

  • I'm with you finders keepers, if you can't keep track of your stuff than you don't deserve the cash.

I have a feeling there will be a lot of law suits about this.

I'd keep it and turn it in after awhile.  There was a lot of issues I found with the story.  I didn't read the article posted here but I read about it last week.  How could the person who threw it away even "know" it was hers?  Did she sign the back of the ticket?  In the article I read the store couldn't substantiate the claims based on the time the ticket was purchased or something like that.  What a mess.

  • I didn't read the article, so I don't know what kind of trash bin it was found in. If it had been in the woman's personal trash (ie: other lady was dumpster diving) then that is one thing. But if it was found in a public trash, how could you even begin to try to find the original owner of the ticket. And how would anyone believe that the ticket belonged to the 2nd lady? How do you prove it was yours?

So in a nutshell, I'd keep it for a few days, then cash it in. If someone came forward in the meantime, I'd ask for a finders fee :)

  • Unless I saw the person actually throw the card away or drop it, I'd spend it.

I believe it was in the trash outside the convenience store.

even if I saw her throw it away, I'd keep it!  it's not like you wouldn't know you won, it's a scratch ticket.  If she dropped, it that's another story.

  • Scratch tickets aren't rocket science. If she thought her ticket was a dud and legitimately threw it away, her loss. My gain! Wink
